Go for it...

It should be a quite easy task IMO. You'll need a donor diesel 405 as you'll need the diesel fuel tank and fuel lines from it plus a good few odd bits and pieces. I guess too you'll need a diesel exhaust system, the rad, fans and a maybe the bonnet lining if you fit a TD engine with a top mounted intercooler.

I'd recommend you fit a TD engine from a mid-life 405 or Citroen Xantia of about 1993 - 6 vintage fitted with a fully mechanical injection pump. Later TDs had the EPIC ECU controlled pump with all manner of electrickery like keypads that could make your conversion a bit tricky. TDs in a 405 go well too, especially the mid-life ones as they seem a bit more powerful than the early ones. May just be my imagination though.

Note that if you have a Citroen Xantia as a donor, you won't have the vacuum pump that lives on the end of the camshaft to generate brake servo vacuum. Also, the Xantia uses a front mounted intercooler in front of the rad which I dont think can be easily mounted in a 405 although, arguably, it's a better place for it.

A bit of electrical work will be necessary but essentially all you'll need to make it run is a switched +12V to the stop solenoid, alternator and starter wiring which will be the same as the old engine anyway. You'll need the glowplug timer/controller and do a bit of additional wiring for this.

It'll be a bit of a pain getting the tacho to work but it can be done. Try to get a donor with a tacho already and then you'll have the sensor on the top of the bellhousing to drive it. I'm not sure if the diesel and pertol tachos are the same but I know that it has been made to work by others.

I reckon it'll be a walk in the park after doing an MI conversion in a 205 :)

I see you want to tow with it. Again IMO, having owned two 405 TDs and regularly tow a caravan  I find there is no shortage of power but their back ends are very soggy and sink down a long way when the trailer exerts a reasonable noseweight. It is, in fact, one reason why I now have a Xantia for towing duties.

I'm wondering though, if the 405Mi16 had an uprated ARB and torsion bars to stiffen things up a bit. You'll find it needs it when towing anything bigger than a little camping trailer.
