K Light Oddness

Recommended Posts

A few questions about the K light. (MI engine with 3 row management, non CAT)

Sometimes when I start my car the my K light will flash code 12 as soon as the engine is running then stay on. If I kill the ignition for a second the light goes out and stays out. I think the light is wired up properly as it correctly identified a broken water temp sensor.

Also does the K light monitor oil temps? When I was at Castle Coombe on Saturday my K light would come on after about 3 laps, there didn't seem to be any loss of power and water temp was normal (oil temp got to 3 quarters). It did seem to be related to engine temperature as the light went out after I had backed off a bit. This seemed a genuine condition too because doing a quick ignition off/on reset didn't make the light go out.

Can anyone suggest likely causes for the above?

Cheers

Dean

My k-light comes on after running over 5k for a few miles, I slow down and it goes out. It's been mentioned before and it seems to happen to a lot of us but doesn't appear to do any damage.

your ecu will only monitor the likes of engine coolant temp sensor, air flow meter/ air temp sensor, lambda probe (if one is supposed to be there) and any idle control and manifold pressure, its kind of limited, but nice and easy to diagnose

Diagnose what exactly though?

Code 12 is the 'start of test sequence' code. then you get the actual error code(s). Then code 11 to show the end of the test sequence.

issues within the engine management system, either readable value errors, sensors out of range etc..

on my old 405 (when almost new) did this and no codes where ever found, good old bosch ECU's, even the dealer at the time wasn't surprized.

Does anyone know if intermittent codes are stored i.e. if a sensor was reading badly for a few minutes then went back to normal would the code still show up if I put the ECU into diagnostic mode say 2 weeks later?
