Lower Engine Mount 1.9 Gti

Recommended Posts

Ok, I've done the right thing by wading through 18 pages of posts on Engine Mounts but I've not managed to find a definitive statement on the right way to handle the lower mount.

Is it a driveshaft off job or is it possible to carry out with the shaft in-situ - I'll be fitting Group N type mounts so they'll be less pliable than the normal ones.

Many thanks...

You have to press the original mount out and press the new one in, this would be impossible with the mount on the car, so it's a driveshaft out job I'm affraid

Oh, and being less pliable is irrelevant on the rear mount as they all have a metal out rim anyhow, hence having to be 'pressed' in

It is just about possible without removing the driveshaft, I've done it...

Drill a hole in the rubber then thread the blade of a hacksaw through and cut through the outer metal sleeve to release the old mount, then fit the new mount with the aid of a hammer and block of wood. Have to admit though that when I tried this it mashed up the edge of the sleeve that I was hammering against, and I couldn't drive it fully home so had to bend a kink in the lower mounting fork to clear the housing. Also involved lots of time lying under the car getting bits of dirt falling in my face! In hindsight it would have been easier to just remove the drivehshaft...

erm not 100% true, u can get the large mount out without a press. what we did was cut away the nackered rubber, then cut thro the metal outer rim to get it out. the new one slid on reletivly easy.

but just to kinda high-jack, dont buy peugeot mounts, they are purely s*ite!

this is a engine mount i changed about a month ago!!

I've changed mine in situ too, on hindsight (agreeing with Jonah here) tho if you have the tools and know how it's done it would be quicker to remove the driveshaft etc first and unbolt the mount casting. Once in a vice it would be easier. When you put the new one in run some emery over the inside of the casting and then grease it to aid refitting. Avoid Europarts ones, I've since fitted Gp N ones. More vibration but less movement

Thanks for the quick responses - looks like it's about 50% either way so I'll take a look at the weekend and decide which way to try.

I have just changed my bottom mount this weekend. I didnt remove the mounting itself either. To get the old one out like the others said, cut through the metal ring from the inside. To get the new one in, put a little bit of oil round the metal ring on the new mount, get it started with a block of wood and a hammer being careful it starts straight. To get the rest of the way in, get a metal plate that is bigger than the outside of the mounting attatched to the car, drill a hole in thye centre of it, use a bolt that goes through the plate and the new mount, then just tighhten the bolt up whilst gently tapping the outer steel ring with a block of wood. It should slide in relatively easily. This technique was dead easy and way less time consuming than removing the whole lot. Good luck with which ever way you choose!

Did mine in situ....cut the old one out. Combined copper mallet and grease got the new one in. Took about an hour. They are tapered so get it the right way around.

OK so it can be done with it in... but it's FAR easier to do it with the mount removed!

This is exactly how i did it, only took me an hour or so aswell, and that was with a Baker bottom mount. :(

Its easier to do with it removed true, but i just couldnt be arsed to do it at the time, plus i bloody hate the smell of gearbox oil! :)
