Cooked Rings?

Was stuck on the M1 last night for some time due to a 4 car pile up...(in 6miles of stationary traffic :wacko: )

 

Couldnt stop the car as the starters definately knackered.

 

Pop the bonnet to try and drop the temperature, and see gasses escaping from the oil filler. It wasn't a continuous stream of gas but was rythmic with the engine.

 

So....Is there a likelyhood of the rings on one or more pistons being shot? It still pulls well all the way to the redline. So i would assume i'd see a drop in performance if there was a loss of compression?

 

Its due and oil change and i guess i should have put better oil in for the ring. Although the temps didnt get that hot.

Im going to change the oil to see if i can see anything but would like opinions on the above.

quite pissible, other thing that can cause this is valve stem seals.

If this is the only problem though it may mean they are worn but not shot. May be most engins do it but we don't often open the engine bay up with it that hot so just haven't noticed.

Ive got a catch tank set up on my pug to get rid of the mayo problem and theres loads of crankcase gases coming out of it and it is rythmic with the engine, bearing in mind shes done 160k, fires first time and with no loss of oil or power. Indication of badly worn rings/liners is normally poor starting in the colder months and excessive oil usage. Do a compression test if you want just to put your mind at rest, if it aint broken then dont fix it.

All engines do this, But if this is Excessive then it will be the ring's,

On tickover with the oil filler off you should feel a light puff puff on your hand, any more and it's getting worn, But if it still goes well leave it alone

I think the rings on my 1.9 are a bit tired(!) as it does use excessive amounts of oil. As the car runs fine I've just left it alone. At what point does it become seriously terminal? and whats the best way to get around the problem? Sort the rings or just swap the lump?

my mate had the same problem but with his rebuilt RS turbo engine, gasses where spitting out of the rocker cover and he thought his rings had been cooked, however when he ripped the engine apart only after two months of driving it, he found that 2 out of the 4 brand new pistons had cracked completly and had chucks nearlly hanging off only being held together by the rings :huh:, i ran off before i could see him cry....
