Unstable On Motorway

Iv'e had this before when a track rod end went, but I've checked them today and they're fine.

I did notice that one of the rear tyres was a bit low (I must have a nail in it :wacko: ).

I've pumped it back up but It might be a while before I get chance to take it on the motorway.

Anyone noticed light steering & unstable handling (like a windy day) on motrway with a slow puncture on a rear tyre?

Rear beam - mine is seized and it is all over the place on the motorway.........scary.................

My dodgy handling always turned out to be rear beam or wishbone bushes - and one other time it was ovaling of hub carrier causing huge play.

I refurbed the rear beam about a year ago. Its handled perfectly untill last week.

The beam looks fine, unless something has come loose.

Thanks I'll check that if it's still doing it.

I also get the same problem but only when i'm lifting off at motorway speeds. Really quite unnerrving when you unintentionally switch lanes at 90! It doesnt feel like the back end though. the joints on the front all feel ok. Is it a normal GTI thing to swing about?

Mine did that, and to say it switches lane is NO JOKE!

 

It is proper dodgy.

 

Rear beam all the way on mine, needs sussing before something REALLY goes wrong.

I'll go with wishbone bushes on this one. You might not be able to feel any play but it only takes a minute amount to make the car feels nervous.

Now, you say that, but the car feels like it moves like a forklift truck, rear steer!!!

 

Also, mine had a pair of new wishbones on it, As I thought that was the cause, but ended up being the rear.

Just been for a spin, not on the motorway but something doesn't feel right still.

I've to renew the brake pads as there's about 1mm of meat on all of them, so I'll split the ball joints and look for play in the wishbone bushes. while doing the brakes.

The rear beam looks fine, ie. not seized and the shocks absorbers are both working.

I'll check for play in the trailing arms though when I do the rear brakes sometime this week.

Had a similar problem on my pug about 3 years ago. Driving in the first lane and I noticed I was correcting the steering in a straight line?, changing lanes was unnerving to say the least especially the poor surface from the "truck ruts", front end was nice and tight, turns out it was the rear axle rubber mounts were perished.

Definately either wishbone bushes, balljoints, loose front subframe mounting bolts (6 to check), or ovalled hub.

 

mine was balljoints and you could tell this by a knocking noise when turning slowly into a sharp corner

Little more info on what where the ball joints and hub are :blush: I know what things look like but not the name. Had the above problem for a while and done most things

My car would pull to one side on accelerating then pull to the other on decellerating. I could have done a slalom without moving the steering!!!!!!!!!

Was truly scary.

 

Turned out to be the wishbone bushes.

If it is the bushes, you can get a kit from Peugeot that contains all the bushes plus new nuts, bolts and washers for both wishbones for about £15.

 

You would probably need to order them, part No 3599 07-kit flex joint.

Checked the wishbones & balljoints last night they're fine.

I split the ball joints from the hub to check them and tuged on the wishbones, no movement.

I remember going off a verry large kerb the otherday, maybe something is bent?

I'lll get the tracking checked this weekend.

I have similar symptons, scary torque steer on accelerating and decelerating - changinf gear at speed is exciting. I checked wishbone bushes - they seemed ok. Replaced drop links - seemed better, but has come back.

 

Just tonight checked the wishbones again - and low and behold loads of movement side to side on drivers side. Dont know how I missed it first time but I did. So it might be an idea to check again.

Alex, have you checked the suspension top nuts for tightness?

Mine began to move about a bit, at speed. I checked the usual today, and then bingo. The top nuts on the nearside are loose. Unfortunately I can't tighten them at the moment.
