S16 & Mi16 Gear Ratios

Recommended Posts

mos

hi,

i am trying to decide which of the three gearboxes i have here to use in my 2.2 s16 conversion.

i have a standard 1.6 box, standard1.9 or standard 2.0ltr s/mi16 box

the 2.0ltr box is from either 2.0 S16 or Mi16 not sure which (Dazza can you help, as its the one i got from you.)

the question is are the s16 and 2.0lt mi16 the same ratios as each other and are these boxes the same ratios as the earlier 1.9Mi16 boxes?

which box would you guys recommend for use in my project?

or is a hybrid box of some description the way forward?

thanks

All the 16v boxes, from BE1 to the Late BE3R's are the same ratio's, You need to be careful if the box has been changed in the past which happen's allot, You should see what assortment of ratio's I get

For the type of box you need, What is the car being used for etc?

sorry should have stated the car is for road use

what box or hybrid boxwould you guys recommend i use here

cant decide as i have read a lot of posts about how the 1.9 box does not suit the 16v engineetc, but i am wondering if this carries through to the torquier 2.0lts especially one modifed to 2.2 etc which should have a fair amount of torque

just bought a standard 1.9 this week for the project and i have to admit i certainly do prefer the longer 1st and 5th on the motorway over the 1.6box i have been using these past couple of years.

its also been nice listening to the road sound of a proper standard gti on injection, forgotton what it sounds like after running twin carbs for 7-8 years!

the quandry for me is i dont want to spend a small fortune on a engine and throtlle bodies etc to fall at the last hurdle by pairing it with an ill advised choice of gearbox!

thanks

With the extra torque you'll get I can;t see why the 1.9 box wouldn't suit your needs really as a easy find, It's not difficult to change the box so give it ago a see if you like it, As every one has different needs
