ORB 227 1 Cars Posted September 7, 2006 Well, this has probalbly been covered before, and it is not 205 related, but I will try my luck by asking! i bought (brand new) in march 2003 a Saxo VTR in black pic: I have had it as my daily driver and run about hack since new, and i must say, i rather love it. Its rapid, cheap and not a BMW, Mondeo or the like.... So, my problem... About a month after the warrenty expired, the gearbox starts to make a shed load of noise in reverse, and I mean, a shed load, it sounds like its lost teeth, shed a bearing and got loads of gravel in the oil. I know these boxes are cack, and i know they are not the toughest of gearboxes, but, what do you recon the problem is? It runs like a dream in all 5 of the forward gears, and never misses a tooth, but backwards, it stinks! I have donated the car to the wife as we wanted rid of her 206 1.4 lx on an S plate, I drive companny cars now so the 205's are toys and the saxo is hers. Any advice, clues or even any advice of a box that will go straight in? I wan my wifes car to be sweet. thanks ORB
jacobs53 0 Posted September 8, 2006 (edited) This box has a unique problem with reverse gear teeth. When i opened up my old gearbox (which had only covered 24,000 miles) the reverse idler gear had snapped in half. When i measured the clearance of a working box it seems they vary quite considerably. The reverse gear is produced from a soft metal, and you can mark it quite easily with a file. I guess your idler gear has started to snap in half - similar to mine, which is on a metro by the way - and it will suddenly get worse and finally fail. If you want an uprated MA box, look to find a rover 216 bubble gearbox - code is 65U (U being the uprated sign) and transplant these gears into the MA peugeot casing. lee Edited September 8, 2006 by jacobs53
ORB 227 1 Cars Posted September 8, 2006 Cool Cheers mate! so, tell me if you were me, and you just wanted your wifes car to be OK and not make a s*it load of noise in reverse, what EXACTLY would you do? ang a new box in, or what?
welshpug 1,657 Posted September 9, 2006 dont put it in reverse!! sorry! just make sure the car reaches standstill before selecting reverse basically, do it as the instructor said!
jacobs53 0 Posted September 9, 2006 I would personally fit a good box before its too late. I left mine untul the complete idler gear fell off its shaft, and the gearbox was fuber. Fit a new box. If you want an uprated box locate a rover 216 bubble and use the gears from that and place into your MA casing.
