huzzer 0 Posted September 5, 2006 When driving along with the windows open there is a very strong smell of fuel in the car. It is also drinking loads of fuel. I saw in a previous post about a dodgy ecu temp sensor which made the car run rich, has this got anything to do with it?
jimbean 0 Posted September 5, 2006 is it only when the sunroof is open? every slide sunroof model 205 i have driven has a feul smell when sunroof is open could be me but i have noticed many times
huzzer 0 Posted September 5, 2006 its when anything is open. its no worse when its open, its just bad all the time! When the engine is idling and im under the bonnet I cant smell anything, only when moving along?
jimbean 0 Posted September 5, 2006 easy way to check if it has a fault is to go to any mot center and ask for a mot co check.. it will tell u if the fueling is correct
boldy205 75 Posted September 5, 2006 suppose your looking at overfueling (can be caused by engine temp sensor) or a fuel leak? a leak being the first to find/most serious!
huzzer 0 Posted September 5, 2006 I cant find any leaks whilst looking around the car, and if you rev whilst at standstill there is no indication of leakage. If it was the temp sensor would the engine tick over normally when warm or slightly high (1500rpm)?
jimbean 0 Posted September 5, 2006 but no smell under bonnet only driving?
Guest RickGTIBaker Posted September 5, 2006 Fully clean out the AFM. The mixture screw on my had caked up completely and caused an awful stink of fuel and drank likr Saudi Arabia was giving it away!
huzzer 0 Posted September 5, 2006 yeah just when moving. the inlet manifold isnt being cooled currently as the previous owner bunged up the coolant hose. Im not sure why, I can only guess it was a bodge to try and make it run better/faster? I removed the bung and reconnected the hose to the manifold but the coolant just came straight out of an exit tube right next to the one going in. Can anybody tell me where the second pipe from the inlet manifold goes to? (when looking from front to back of car, under the throttle body first pipe is where the coolant goes in but comes straight out of no' 2? Sorry rick, was typing when you posted that. Where is the AFM?
Guest RickGTIBaker Posted September 5, 2006 Air Flow Meter, dependant on air filter upgrades, usually Left of the battery, metal unit with a big moving flap in it, the a Allen Key bolt in it (thats the Mixture screw). Those pipes are throttle body heater pipes, nothing to do with the issue. Either the mixture is miles over (Carboned plugs and black exhaust is a sign of it), or you have a leak/block. Tank vents may lock, try running it WITHOUT the fuel tank cap in for a few miles. Fuel pressure valve (Drivers side of fuel rail) may be weeping or the return hose perishing. If there's no obvious leakage signs, that AFM is a good strong case.
huzzer 0 Posted September 5, 2006 thanks, i'll check that out first thing. Does the black plastic cover over the top of the afm come off? It looks pretty stuck on? thanks, i'll check that out first thing. Does the black plastic cover over the top of the afm come off? It looks pretty stuck on? Guest RickGTIBaker Posted September 5, 2006 They do come off, but nothing in there needs moving or altering. Keep us informed, hope a split pipe doesn't do to yours what it did to mine... Thats a split fuel return pipe after tank pressure build up. Sniff.
huzzer 0 Posted September 5, 2006 OUCH! Did you have to bin it? where is the allen screw located on the afm and what am i aiming to do? remove the screw completly or remove the afm completely and clean it out?
Guest RickGTIBaker Posted September 5, 2006 Simple to remove the whole unit, pop to a main dealer and ask for a tin of BRAKE DUST ARRESTOR, removel the allen screw and FULLY clean till mint. Mine was bunged solid and was drinking and smelling, good clean out and now I get WELL over 200 miles a tank, whereas before I proper struggled! It was binned :'( Was driving it when it went BOOM too, The missus was promptly threw out... ..To guard the quickly following tools and Sub! Years ago that now.
