Does This Sound Like Bottom End To You.

Recommended Posts

Matt Holley

My 205 has made this noise since a thash round silverstone on the weekend, the oil pressure is still fine it goes as well as it did and it only does it under light acceleration and when really nailing it.

It doesnt do it on tick over or just driving at constant speed.

It sound to knocky to be tappets to me and i thought i would see if anyone on here has had the noise before I go ripping it apart.

That does sound a tiny bit like a bottom end rattle...

Get a screwdriver, press it on your ear and the rocker cover and rev the engine a bit...you should be able to rule out the top end then

Agree it does sound like bottom end.

Best bet is to whip off the sump and have a look at one of the bearings.

is it a rattle or a knock? rattling is 'normally' pistons and knocking is big end, normally accompanied by pressure changes, that clip sounds like the sea, lol

Yip, Big End death rattle.

Could be, fingers crossed, the Clutch release bearing, but thats being UBER optimistic.

This sounds too rhythmical to be anything else.

Lob some 20/50 in and see if it goes a little quieter.

Is the timing spot on, could be pinking of epic proportions!?!?!

Do I have to play it backwards or something ?

Doesn´t even sound like an engine running.

There's really only a few things it could be. Pinking on load only really, doesn't happen when not loaded and sounds like a really rattly nut and bolt in the engine bay.

The other is what's been suggested already, which is bearings on the bottom end or little end failure. Little ends are quite a light sounding tap or rattle a bit like pinking, whereas big end bearing is a definate knocking noise from the engine. A bit like a valve clearances but only happens on load.

As Boombang said you should get the sup off, whip the big end caps off and have a look at the condition of the bearings.
