Bonzai 2 Posted September 5, 2006 ive just run a search on this, found that most common answer is the ignition amp but im not convinced as it only happens momentarily perhaps once or twice per journey, usually when cold (but not always) started about 10 days ago when i red lined the engine in 1st and 2nd maybe only a minute after startup (i know i know, but the engine only has to last me the end of the month) since then its happened maybe every other journey, seems to be typically from low revs (1-2k), 95% of the time when pulling off from a junction. it never stalls but this might be bacause i can rescue it with quick footwork, i cant say for sure. The symptoms of it are actually very much liek an airleak but iev checked teh pipework between the afm and inlet quite well and havent noticed anything amiss advice appreciated here Ben Share this post Link to post Share on other sites

Rob_the_Sparky 9 Posted September 6, 2006 It is most likely a weak spark. If it is then it would be worse under load. Basically check the ignition system end to end and see what you find. Rob sounds like pinking to me, are you still using the same fuel you've always used? or have you downgraded to normal unleaded since you dont care about the engine? Grahamrally 0 Posted September 7, 2006 If it's hesitating in the sense that it's missing a beat, i.e miss-firing then you need to check the ignition system. Start with the spark plugs and work your way backwards. Miami, I've not hear of it hesitating because of pinking, it will loose power generally not just hesitate and it will make one god awful noisey rattle. Bonzai 2 Posted September 7, 2006 still using sainsburies 97 ron ive always used. doesnt make a noise like its pinking anyway though. Its not really misfiring either. Its hard to describe but almost feels like the throttle is stuck closed as it just refuses to rev for just a second and then when it does eventually get going it lurches like the kangarooing characteristic of low rev driving. usually when it happens i stab the throttle until it responds and get in a low gear to get the revs up high and bully the engine into working! Bonzai 2 Posted July 8, 2007 (edited) I cant believe i've done this again, 10 months on in another 8v, i did hundreds of miles home from santa pod yesterday absolutely fine. got almost home, pulled away from a roundabout a little excitedly in 1st gear and wouldnt rev well at all, now wont go over 2.5k revs. It doesnt register as a misfire to me by the sound its making but i guess it must be. Plugs seem ok although the holes were all wet/oily/corroded/burnt in some way so i cleaned them up. The leads, well two of them are a bit suspect, one looks like its got a slightly mullered contact onto the plug and the other feels sloppy like it may not be making contact at all so i will be changing those asap. Dizzy cap and rotor arm look good as new. If not cured i might need to locate a spare coil and/or ign amp to swap Edited July 8, 2007 by Bonzai Share this post Link to post Share on other sites
petesy71 0 Posted July 8, 2007 hi bonzai. iv'e recently been suffering the same problems; after getting the timing belt done the car felt down on power and was hitting flat spots, like missing a beat. cutting a bit of slack from the throttle cable returned most of the power, and after replacing ht leads and dizzy cap the flat spots were still there so i replaced the coil and this ironed it out, flat spots gone. ive still a few issues though but i'll open another thread. good luck, pete.
