Guages Problem

Hi,

 

Bought my 1.6 GTi 3 weeks ago now, and have a problem with the guages, I've yet to get a haynes manual for a wiring guide so that's not helping me, but if there is a guide online I'd be grateful if someone could point me in that direction!

 

The guages not working are oil pressure, oil temp and engine/water temp. Is there a common fuse somewhere for these 3? and are they linked? or is it just a really bad coincidence they all are not working and I should deal with them one at a time?

 

Also my clock isn't lighting up while I'm here, if anyone can advise on that too, does seem to show the time I think though.

 

oh it's a 1990 H reg if that makes a difference too.

 

It also has a aftermarket alarm (Pirana is the make) and that doesnt seem to be working and has added wires all over the place which doesn't help either.

Prime suspect for these three gauges is the very infamous brown multi-plug you'll find in the engine bay on top of the gearbox under the AFM. All three gauge senders run via here and the plug is a victim of corrosion. Pull it apart and clean it the best you can. It might work for a bit but they are impossible to clean well and replacements is the best bet.

 

Note also the starter solenoid feed also goes via this connector and the connector is often the cause of intermittent failure of the starter motor.

 

Clock illumination problem will be the bulb behind it.

Thanks, I had a look but not sure if I found it, the light is going now, so will have to leave it for today.

I took a few pics and will upload in a minute so someone can confirm if I'm looking in the right place.

A brown connector I originally thought was a engine diagnosis plug, but might be this brown multiplug:

And another 'while I'm here', What's this thing? it got hot at one point as it has melted sleeving of another cable it was resting on:

The easy test to see if it's the wiring at fault or the sender is to take the wire off the sender and earth it (ignition on), if the gauge you are testing goes up to max then the wiring is fine and the sender is at fault.

Pictures from the top:

 

1. Could be...

 

2. Cooling fan test diagnostic plug. Short it to test the fans. Short one way and they will run half speed and 'tother they will run at full speed) See 4. below.

 

3. Most likely the reversing light switch loom going to the gearbox.

 

4. Cooling fan resistor. This is the resistor that goes in series with the fan to give the half speed. It is shorted out for the fan to run at full speed. It could also be your "Dim Dip" resistor. This will put your headlights on dim when sidelights are on. IIRC few 205s had Dim Dip but yours just might. They get hot in use so need to be kept clear of other wiring. It normally clips to the top of the rad.

 

To get to the brown multiplug I spoke of, you'll have to remove the AFM. You'll find it on top of the gearbox and covered in 7 layers of s*ite...

OK, I've been tinkering all day, I'm pretty sure that first pic I posted up there is it, it has similar colour wires in it to people who have posted a pic on other threads, someone must have replaced the brown multiplug before with this on my car.

 

I took out the wires and cleaned up (with vinegar!) and after reconnecting they still don't work :wub:
