Guest RickGTIBaker Posted September 3, 2006 Want to keep the current hubs, what Caliper/Disc/Pad set should I be looking for, ideally ALOT better than the standard 1.6 brakes. Tar!
pug_ham 244 3 Cars Posted September 3, 2006 None unless you want to spend quite a bit of cash. Although Constella sell the big brake conversion brackets (& give a discount to members of this forum) on ebay for both 1.6 or 1.9 GTi but finding discs with the right offset for the 1.6 hubs isn't easy afaik. Guest RickGTIBaker Posted September 3, 2006 Seen some he has, the GTi-6 conversion plates. Just want something where I can unbolt the 1.6 calipers, replace them with slightly bigger calipers, use slightly wider discs and keep with the 1.9 wheels. TBH - it may just be a case of fully cleaning these calipers, replacing the nipples, fill with Dot5.1 (sat aside) and new discs/pads.
Doof 11 Posted September 3, 2006 How about an upgrade to 1.9 running gear up front, then some greenstuff pads and ATE powerdics...should be relatively cheap and will stop very well. Be careful though, i found this to be a slippery slope and suddenly i've spent some £900+ buying 307 brakes, billy sprintlines, grp N bushes etc etc

Why do you want to change? 1.6 Drums, when correctly set up, are very good indeed. I know drums are not "sexy" but on a 205 they are very functional as it does not need a lot of braking effort at the rear. The drum handbrake is absolutely fantastic. The only downside of drums is they are a bit more labour-intensive than discs and need to have the hub nut removed to get at them.
