Rear Brake Cylinder Replacement

Just noticed fluid loss from the r/n/s wheel and the reservoir bottle is down in level.

 

So I am assuming I have a defective brake cylinder.

 

I changed one of these on my Series 2 RS Turbo some years ago and found it relatively easy however was wondering how easy it would be on the Pug. Front brakes are Bendix (or whatever you call them) and so I asume the rears are the same. It is an MY88 1.6 GTI.

 

What would you guys suggest, have a go myself or get it to the garage? Knockhill on the 17th and I am fairly busy till then.

should be identical in procedure, but for how the rear drums are held on (never seen an escort so i dont know there)

 

remove drum, unscrew brake pipe from rear, unscrew 2 bolts and remove wheel cylinder, clean up mating surfaces on backplate, copper grease the back of the cylinder, bolts and hose union taking care not to get any in the brake fluid.

 

Clamp the flexihose thats by the beam with a hose clamp of molegrips to prevent fluid loss, and bleed the brakes afterwards of course.

Sound pretty much the same. The hub removal is slightly different (I have done that before) so I think I will give it a bash!!

 

Seized bolts - likely I take it? Will bolts be likely to snap?

get a wire brush and clean off the rust, then use a well fitting brake hose union spanner on the nuts as well as the hose union as they have flats that go right to the edge of the spanner but are as close as you can get to a ring spanner (which are usually chamfered)

 

seized/rounded off ones are common, in which case undo the uniion, and unbolt the backplate so you can use and angle grinder on the bolts, theyre just standard M5 (or M6, can remember for sure) so whack some stainless ones in the like I did when I fixed a mates 106 :P

The bolts usually come undone ok from the wheel cylinder, I've removed them on beam that have been on the car since new with no problem but the brake pipe union will more likely be rusted to the pipe so it will twist the pipe when you try to undo it.

 

If this happens undo the two 10mm bolts holding the cylinder to the backplate & turn the cylinder instead once you've cracked the union off.

 

I've done it this way as a temporary fix to get a car through the MOT & replaced the beam for discs shortly afterwards when I had more time.

Don't bank on it. I have Bendix at the front and Girling on the back. It makes no difference to the procedure though.

 

Check your self-adjusters are working properly...
