Recommended Posts

hi all,

i have develope yeat another oil leak but this time i think it may be from gearbox diff??

i aint sure, so juts want so ideas!??

i have looked behind engine block and i cant see any trace of engine oil only oil i cant see is from the bottom bolt of the diff!!!

i have tried smelling it and i have compared it to some used gearbox oil i emptied from it 3 months ago and i think ti smells the same smely it that many times(engine then gearbox oil) and in the end they all smell the same, cos my nose packed in, so it has confused me.

any ideas where the oil coming from???

oh yeah the drive shaft oil seals been down about 3 months ago same as gearbox oil

heres a piccy, you can see wheres its leaking and its dropping form the bottom nut of diff in the picture

Hi Kid

First thing you need to do is ID which oil it either gearbox or engine. Gearbox oil smells a lot stronger than engine oil for a start. The only way I can describe gearbox oil smell is a strong sickly smell which can give you a headache if you sniff it too much, (not that I make a habit of this)!. When was the last time you changed the distributor/camshaft "O" ring?. Sometimes these harden and you get engine oil leaking down the side of the dizzy and down over the gearbox.

Is it leaking substantially? ie dripping? If not just wipe it clean and check again every now and then to see where it appears.

That should make it easier to see exactly where it's coming from.

could be leaking from under the dizzy? Dixxy seals (o ring go), pennies to replace. Could be leaking from speddo drive housing or speddo cable which goes into this. Removing this is an OS drive shaft out job. If it the diff housing it can be done in situ, remove lower eng mount and push engine forward, both drive shafts out. Reseal with blue hylowmar, use a thin model makers brush to put it on, and be careful removing the diff housing as the diff could fall on your head!

when u put the outer oil seals in do you put them in the correct way? also if its a be1 box i dont think yr meant to push them right in else they wont seal. get a pressure washer on it and then leave it running until you determine the source.

its a be3 box, and im sure its coming from diff housing!!!! what im going to do is clean the whole diff box and see where it seeping from!!!!

only a bit of oil like 3 drips or so, so nothing important!!!

if it was comming from dizzy it would be dripping down on gearbox so ill have a look at that 2day now its a nice day!!!!

can you fill thwe gearbox up by removing the cream cap on top of gearbox??

thanks

Have you had the driveshfts out recently?

If the driveshaft seals are more than a few years old they tend not to seal again if desturbed.

9/10 times this is where the gearbox oil leaks from.

The other option would be to replace the copper washer on the gearbox oil drain plug.
