Enfield 0 Posted September 2, 2006 Hi there. My car feels like a boat with wheels (not good) I've done searches but I don't really understand... I want to replace all the bushes and stuff but I have no idea as to how many of what I should get. For example, how many anti roll bar bushes do I get? I'm looking on Eurocarparts and have come across Anti-roll bar bush - blue. Blue? What is that? How many do I need? Also come accross "FRONT STRUT BEARING KIT" and "TOP STRUT MOUNT BEARING . FRONT BEARING". How many of those do I need? Obviously I'm going to order some standard shocks and springs too... Apologies for the stupid questions
bren_1.3 1 Posted September 2, 2006 if you want to replace the anti-roll bar bushes then do so, but youll have to drop the front subframe to do so.(which can be a pain to do) you'll need two of those as there is one either side. are you planning on replacing the bottom wishbones? if so there are two bushes per wishbone so a total of four. or you can just replace the whole wishbone depending on the contidion of the ball joint. with new shocks youll need two top mount bearing kits, one for each strut and two top mount rubber bushes, again one for each strut. off the top of my head theres very little else i can think of that might need replacing on the front suspension. have you thought about the condition of your rear suspension? considering you plan to overhaul the front suspension completely....... Enfield 0 Posted September 2, 2006 (edited) Thanks for your reply mate, greatly appreciated and very helpful! Yeah, though I hear the rear suspension is rather hard to do...I want to lower the car because at the moment it's sitting on 15" speed lines with standard springs and shocks so it looks a tad high. How hard is the rear to do and how long do you think it would take to do? (This is my daily driver). ta Is a balljoint and track rod end the same? Because I'm thinking of changing those over too since they made quite a difference to my previous 205's steering. I need to get the tracking done aswell so I may aswell change the track rod ends because the tyres have uneven wear a bit too. And when I brake the rear end feels like its dipping lol. Also when you get out from the front passenger side the whole car moves backwards and the front end rises quite substantially. pug_ham 245 3 Cars Posted September 2, 2006 Rear suspension isn't hard imo but it depends on your spanner handiness . There is a full rear suspension refurb guide on the main site 205gtidrivers.com under articles. With practice they are less than a days work but first time allow a weekend at least but if the radius arm shafts are marked you need a hydraulic press to replace them & they are order only from Peugeot costing about £55+vat each. Is a balljoint and track rod end the same? No, balljoint is part of the lower wishbone & track-rod end is part of the steering rack. Graham.
Enfield 0 Posted September 2, 2006 (edited) Probably another stupid question but will Gti shock absorbers fit my car? I'm looking at OE Bilsteins all round which are for the Gti... And how hard is it to change a lower engine mount? Edited September 2, 2006 by Enfield
Miles 331 1 Cars Posted September 2, 2006 Don;t forget you've got track control arm's not wishbones, The ARB mounts in these with more bushes and they wear quickly (Tyre wear), The ARB ones are a different colour, only GTI's use Blue & Orange. The GTi strut's do fit base models, The strut top kit will contain 1 bearing and 1 rubber top mount, 2 of these needed. Don;t at any cost get the Bilstein OE rear Dampers, Have a search and see how bad they really are. Track rod ends fit into the steering rack arm's, Before fitting measure the old ones as you can get the tracking about right, then off to a tracking garage. Enfield 0 Posted September 2, 2006 (edited) Thanks for the replies This is what is in my shopping basket Are OE FRONT Bilsteins bad aswell? edit;image size, please read forum rules for sizes Edited September 3, 2006 by pugtorque
Miles 331 1 Cars Posted September 2, 2006 The front OE Billies are fine, It's just the rear, Simes posted a post after I thought his rear's where shot, A couple of years back but a search will find it. I'd be worried if I had a ZX or 306 as the rear damper's are basically the same but all have different damping rates due to the weight of the car.
pug_ham 245 3 Cars Posted September 3, 2006 If you are thinking of getting new top mount rubbers, get a set of the group N ones from BakerBM.com & get the strut bearings listed below as you get just the bearings & no soft rubber donut. GSF part number;N45710 STRUT TOP BEARING 106/205/206/306/307/309/405/PARTNER. Changing the lower engine mount isn't hard but removing it is a pain as you have to take the right hand driveshaft off as the intermediate bearing is fitted to the mount. Getting the old mount out & new mount in shouldn't be to hard, I cut the old one away & hacksawed through the metal case carefully so I could prise it out & then fitted the new one in a vice. Graham. mishu 0 Posted September 4, 2006 (edited) So GTi front shocks do fit base models (1.1 GR (5 door) in particular)? I saw a set from SACHS quoted at a reasonable price including top plate and everything else needed (well, the guy said everything.. guess I'll see). I don't need track stiffness (esp. with our crappy roads), but I figured the GTi setup will be a bit more responsive than the base one (even if they are SACHS). I was planning to use the entire front subframe from the GTi, but given that my budget doesn't allow buying new wishbones (and other needed parts) right now, I'm going to just get a set of GTi shocks to use on my base front setup, and replace the front subframe once I get new parts for it. BTW, I assume the GTi springs would fit the GTi shocks... but just to be sure. Do they? Edited September 4, 2006 by mishu
welshpug 1,675 Posted September 4, 2006 BTW, I assume the GTi springs would fit the GTi shocks... but just to be sure. Do they? errr..... yes! bear in mind that the gti springs are designer for a slightly heavier front end so itll be a bit higher than a gti but as to wether it higher than currently i wouldnt know
mishu 0 Posted September 4, 2006 Well, the 1.1 is a cast iron block, vs. the 1.6 alloy block, so I figured it would even out. More or less anyway..
jackherer 543 Posted September 4, 2006 you may need to relocate the brake hose brackets in the wheelarch if the arb mounting lug on the shock fouls it (or you could cut the lug off the shock if you never plan to fit a gti rollbar)
