I took my mates head off today to find out why he has next to no compression and the valves all look totally undamaged but the casting appears cracked, although it doesnt seem to go through to the combustion chamber. I've seen cracks like that before on an engine that had thrown a rod and I assumed they were caused when the piston hit the head, but I don't know why its happened to this engine, or if they are normal as someone has said to me?

All my Mi16 heads are like that, I think it's a partingline in the casting.

AS per msn and above... ive seen many heads with bigger marks, it is the casting. only becomes a problem when cracked all the way into the valve seat/chamber.

cheers for the replies...

so if thats normal why does it have virtually no compression? it was fine before I put a new timing belt, tensioners and water pump on, it was def timed right, and the valves are totally unmarked now the head is off.

I dont want to put the head back on without workng out what is wrong, I suppose I should get the head looked at somewhere, but could something have suddenly failed in the bottom end? seems unlikely...
