Guidance Required: New Disks And Pads

Recommended Posts

wildejon

Hi,

I'm after some new front pads and disks for my 1.6 setup.

I have settled on Mintex 1144 pads but I'm not sure what disks to get. After an extensive search, it appears that the best bet seems to get some group N ones from Rally Design or ATE Powerdisks from Euro Car Parts. Does anyone have any thoughts on these combinations?

Main reason for asking is to save a bit on the postage getting Group N ones and Pads from Rally Design as they do appear to be the cheapest. I'm not really sure what group N means though...

Cheers,

Jon

group N is a specification for regulating modifications on rallycars.

Its much misused as casrs like the 205 are outside regs now so generally you can assume it means that a product is midly uprated as per grp N regs (e.g. engine mounts - they are required to have the same proportions of rubber/metal as standard roadgoing OEM but it can be harder) or as in a lot of cases it means that its exactly the same as you can get from your local motorfactors for 1/2 the price.

If you looking at the ones on Rally Design they will be similar to OEM stuff - but having said that the prices aren't too bad. Personally I'd just get a pair of Mintex roadgoing discs like I always do. Never had an issue no matter what pads and they aren't overly expensive.

I'll second that. My motorfactors does them cheap too!

The main thing is to get good pads!

Hi jon I see your local to me :)

The ATE power discs are well good for the price. For a road oriented car pagid blacks are my favourite. Mintex 1144s are a fantastic fast road/track pad also..never been able to stop them squeeling though!

Cheers for your replies all :)

In the end I decided to get those group N ones from Rally Design as it worked out economical with the postage. I don't think my local factors do them for too much less (I also couldn't find Mintex discs for some reason...). Still getting the 1144's though so hopefully I will see an improvement over my current standard setup. I don't mind the disks being slightly inferior to the ATE ones, I'd rather save a few quid in this instance. (Got a RR booked and MOT this month so I'm being stingy!)

Smckeown, I'm pretty sure I've seen your car around. There are quite a few around Brighton.

I've just fitted these pads to my car with the ATE powerdiscs that have been on there for a couple of years now & even though I haven't done much mileage on them now they are bedded in the initial response is fantastic, can't wait to try them on a trackday & see the proper difference.

I was using standard Bendix pads before & had no problems with brake performance or fade on track but these already inspire more confidence & better retardation. :)

Graham.
