You don't seem to be able to buy pattern ones though (GSF/ECP/High St places don't list them). scrap yard is probably the best bet. all you're checking is the u/j itself - make sure there's no play in it and that it isn't at all stiff in either direction. can't remember the change point, but earlier non PAS racks had a circular pinion, whilst later ones had a square pinion. i have a good spare circular pinion one which you can have for the cost of p&p if it's any good to you.
