Gearbox Filler Thread Worn

The gearbox filler thread on my Peugeot 8v xu9ja engine is holding (for now) but is very worn. I notice it is quite a fine thread. What s the best way to fix this. 1. Helicoil 2, Drill and tap to next size 3, buy a new gearbox end cover and 4. can this be done while the gearbox is in the car.

I've never come across this as a problem but in the UK I'd probably get another box as they are so cheap! Probably not an option over there though. Best option has got to be a helicoil, certainly the strongest and you continue to use stock filler bolt and washers.

 

If done on the car you risk getting swarf into the box but I dare say it could be helicoiled in place. There was a thread on here where people were helicoiling spark plugs without removing the engine. If that can be done in place I don't see why a box can't be.

I agree with Rob that a helicoil is the best long-term. It has been suggested (on another well respected forum for French cars) that on larger cars that use the BE3 'box, notably Citroens, it is quite possible to remove the end-cover from the 'box and slide the gearset out intact. If this is indeed possible than at leat you can have the thread helicoiled with very much less danger of swarf ingress.

 

The time honoured bodge of wrapping the thread in string and PTFE tape should serve until you can have it properly sorted.

I would just use the filler on the top of the gearbox, that should be o.k for time being.

Agreed. Ptfe tape, and fill from the top. I'm pretty sure BE1s don't have level/ filler plugs anyway. Drain it out into a 2lts bottle, top up if neccesary and pour back in the top!
