Rear Beam Rebuild Help

Recommended Posts

skeggyrik

I've read loads of the stuff about rear beam refurbs, all the problems people have, all the clever ways you lot have come up with to get round those problems. I've read the refurb guide and I've been under the car and had a good look at what I'm dealing with.

I don't have high hopes for the Rear beam. It's lower one side than the other, it all looks well gummed up and mucky, it's not been paid any attention in long a time. It's probably partially ceased. I'm hoping it hasn't ruined the beam. First question is if I want to jack it up to lift both wheels off the ground and see what gives. Where is best to place my only trolley jack? Can you jack off (no comments) the rear beam directly? If not where or is it a one side at time and use axle stands on the sill jacking points?

I may drop the beam one night this week and get try getting it apart. That way I'll know whether it's chaffinched or not. Another concern is about leaving it up on the sill jacking points for too long. I'm thinking bricks and wood batten at point of contact with jacking point. Either that or I buy axle stands and again using wood to ease the metal on metal contact at the jacking points. Is the shell ok to sit on these points for a week or so?

My eyes are open for a rebuilt one, it would be much easier and quicker, but it's not cheap. I've seen the place that does off the shelf refurbed ones for about £320. Does anyone on the forum still do an exchange service or offer their skills for cash? I'm in Birmirmingham if anyone is interested. Thought I'd check before I go and have a stab myself.

should be fine on axle stands, I left mine on 2 big logs for 3 months while I rebuilt my own beam.

realistically there wont be any secondhand beams in that good a nick so Its worthwhile getting your own one refurbed or finding a guaranteed unit.

I took mine apart myself to find that there werent any bearings left and that the trailing arm axles were badly worn as well aqs the internal surface of the tube, £400 later I had a brand new tube with bearings already fitted and a pair of stub axles from peugeot. all I had to do was take the trailing arms to a forge to get the axles swappes and stick it back together.

Yes you can jack the car on the beam its self. It should also be fine on axel stands for a while.

You also dont need to remove the beam from the car to see if its shaged or not. you can remove the trailing arms, torsion bars and anti roll bar to inspect the shafts, bearings and crossmember tube with the beam still attached to the car.

Good luck

but only if you're outside or have at least a 16 foot wide garage!!! much easier to remove the beam as it often needs "persuasion" which isnt a good idea when the car is on axle stands...
