Sluggish Mi

Recommended Posts

Hello all,

Basically my MI runs fine, starts fine, idles well, engine is healthy (oil pressure etc). Last couple of weeks though its started to get a little sluggish all over the rev range, more noticeably lower in the range (initial throttle response when you go to overtake for example). Plus it smells strongly of unburnt fuel all the time, and pops and bangs alot on the overrun, and im sure the exaust note on full chat has changed somewhat (though that could just be me hearing things!). Apparently it shoots large flames out of it on the limiter, so its obviously got a fair bit of fuel running through it!

My initial thoughts are maybe weak spark, as i havent changed the dizzy cap and rotor arm since ive had the car running (10k now!), and the cap has quite deep marks in the contacts. Past that i dont know, AFM maybe starting to go down?

Also the idle has always been fine, but when you first press the throttle there is a small pause before the engine responds. This has always been present.

Any ideas appreciated.

Dan. :)

What throttle body have you got? I've seen two different weber ones, one that opens both butterflies together & one that is progressve.

C_W had problems with his a while ago when one of the butterflies wasn't opening either at all or fully but don't know if it caused this type of problem.

A weak spark would show up more in starting imo.

One thing for you to look at.

Graham.

From what you've said i'd check you're throttle cable, sounds silly but could've fallen out of adjustment or stretched?

Regarding whatGraham said about throttle bodies, i change mine recently, and the one thats now in it works differently to the previous. The second choke opens when the first is almost fully open, and is a little different but you get used to it, justseems has a spot where it opens up more when driving, but possibly nicer gentle driving. But think i'm going to change back to the multiple ones, as what's supposed to be, but i'd have to presume either arefine really!

But also i have now been in a few 'healthy' Mi's, and they're not all the same, they seem to perform differently, a bit like all engines i suppose!

Thats a very good point about the throttle cable, as i had to adjust it the other week as the pedal had gone low. However i didnt check it had full throttle afterwards. Worth a check if nothing else! And il take the induction hosing off at the same time and have a look at the body.
