Unless there are special tools available which I haven't seen, no. It would be extremely diffcult if that was the case. And it's a good opportunity to lap in the valves of an engine this old, to improve the gas seal.

it can be done yes by making a spiecial tool... get a sparkplug break the porcelin and internals out so you can see through it then weld it to a air tool union so it can be pluged into a air line... then do the seals cylinder by cylinder, get tappets on the rock and do opposite cylinder.. ie" 1 rocking do 4" screw the tool into the plug hole then plug into airline..."hey presto" valves cannot drop into liner cos they are held up by compressed air..

Yes, fine. That part is easy enough.

So how does one now compress the valve spring, remove the collets and get the old seal out and install a new one. The springs are deep in the follower bores and nigh-on impossible to compress in-situ. Is there a set of special tools for that too, one to compress the springs and another to remove/install the seal. In my experience, the seals are tricky enough with the head on the bench and the valve out.

This subject is now almost ann urban legend. Has anyone actually successfully done this job without removing the head?

Long story short:

Mate dropped torx bit into open top of head on Mi lump trying to undo stuck cam cap bolt. Went right behind one of the valve springs in the corner.

Freshly built engine and block helicoiled so didn't want to remove head to flush out.

Made up tool from copper pipe went down plug hole, held up valve.

I held this, he used valve spring compressor head on a huge pair of molegrips.

A third guy was in charge of collets.

Was a real pain to get it off, but got the bit out, and then spent hours trying to put it back - almost losing the collets in the head a number of times.

Not worth it unless you only doing one, and even then our hands hurt from holding molegrips for hours (as no where to get them to actually clamp and lock - needed holding tight!)
