Guest rick03054 Posted August 25, 2006 I removed the arm on top of it, tried to tw*t it round with a hammer and chisel and now the captive nut is just spinning underneath. Has anyone done this? How can I stop it spinning? It doesn't look like it's going to be easy to hold steady. There's a housing round the nut I think but thats come loose at one side, theres not exactly much room to stick something up through the headlight hole to hold the nut. Then I would have to hold it in position while I screwed the new mount on. Any ideas before I end up making more of a mess of it?
cybernck 402 1 Cars Posted August 26, 2006 i've had this happen before . some garages suggested it's impossible to sort out, one even wanted to cut through the inner wing to reach it , but finally the last garage sorted it by removing the headlight and spot-welding the nut back into place (it has been difficult, but they've managed to reach it with a long electrode) and then unscrewing the mount. hope this helps. I had though cutting the housing below the mount may be the only solution. happened to my convertable 205, i managed it by removing the headlight and using a long spanner it came off fine and is still ok 3 years on Any idea what size the nut is? If I could buy a really really long spanner I can see that working.
sonofsam 5 Posted August 26, 2006 Unless you could fashion a really long drift/spike to wedge between the nut and the housing, but even then not the easiest.
Guest rick03054 Posted August 26, 2006 I had a go at that today, really don't think it's going to happen! The housing that holds the nut gets in the way. Which will be a problem with the spanner too. I tried jamming a bit of square tube I had lying around but when I hit the mount the nut just bent the tube and kept on going I think if I can get the housing for the nut out of the way I can get a spanner up there. Although how I'm going to do that is another thing. Right now it feels like this car is about to pass it's more trouble than its worth threshold.
