Guest matts1185 Posted August 24, 2006 hi all have a problem with my steering when turning to the right (if turn to the left it feels fine) it feels like it is trying to straighten itself when turn to the right. get like a big wobble like i have to fight with it to keep it turned. also above 80mph it feels like wheels out of balance then gets worse the faster you go till bout 110 then gets scary feels like it bouncing all over the place. have had a good look carnt see anything noticeable have changed all the shocks to new gaz adjustables made no difference. anyone have any ideas thanks. o yes its a 1.6 gti with mi16 motor thanks all in advance
Jonmurgie 2 Posted August 24, 2006 Welcome to the forum Best thing is to take it to the nearest Wheel Alignment place as it sounds something is well off there. Also get you wheels balanced
wildejon 7 Posted August 24, 2006 I've had a similar problem and agree on getting your wheel alignment looked at...
Guest matts1185 Posted August 29, 2006 just took it for them to have a look. they say its the steering rack that has play init. so off to look for a new one. and see if i can work out why i have bouncey suspension
bales 1 Posted August 29, 2006 I had problems with my steering for ages, and literally eneded up buying loads of new parts, I changed both drop links and both track rod ends and had the tracking done twice. It got a little bit better each time but never 100% so in the end we changed the steering rack as it had a small amount of play in it. Even though the garage I took it to said it wouldn't effect it the way in which I was describing. I basically had the same problems with the steering as you, it would go heavy one way then light then heavy the other way, it would sometimes self-centre really strongly and then not do it at all. I eventually came to the conclusion that the play in the rack was actually allowing the wheels to toe under load when going round corners hence the geometry was always changing which is why it felt so horrible. Changed the steering rack and it is completely fine now.
hengti 2 Posted August 29, 2006 (edited) had a similar problem recently too - before you spend the money on a new rack, it's worth disconnecting the lower steering column u/j (the one that bolts to the rack under the car) to check that it's not stiff in either direction. i did this last after i'd replaced the rack and column and still had the problem Edited August 29, 2006 by hengti

Guest matts1185 Posted August 30, 2006 changed the rack today. thought they were suppossed to come out without lowering the crossmember. bit off a pain but done now. and found out what is wrong with it. bottom hub joint has play init about 2-3 mm. hopeing its the hub and not the wishbone as have some 1.9 hubs comeing anyway. will let you no when they come and i fit them
Gtautotech 1 Posted August 31, 2006 I have the same problem, I've changed my Wishbones & hubs but still have a small amount of play which i thought was the hub gone again as i did one side first then the other, but when i took the trackrod of i notice the hub wasnt moving/clunking like the noise i was getting when moving the hub by hand which makes we think its more the rack as when i pulled on it, i can feel maybe a 3-4mm play in the passanger side of the rack
