Cleaned My Engine And Now It Misfires

Recommended Posts

Guest Charlie

Hi this is my first proper post and Id be really grateful for any advise.

I cleaned my engine the other day which I new might cause problems. Now it looks good but its misfiring really bad. It seems ok for the first couple of minutes after Ive started it but then once its warmed up it starts misfiring really badly. There was a lot of water down with the spark plugs but I think I soaked it up pretty good with some tissue and I also took the distributer cap off and wiped it with a cloth.

Has anyone got any ideas what it could be ?

Cheers,

Charlie

Have you made sure evertying is seated correclty with the ignition leads? how long have you given it to 'dry off' as sometimes it can take a while for the engine to fully get rid of all traces of water...

Could be the HT leads. Even if they look OK the insulation could be damaged.

You probably don't want to put oil on your clean engine but a squirt of WD40 (or similar) on all the electrical bits might sort it.

this happened to me the other weekend when it rained cats and dogs. Basically the local back roads where like rivers and silly me didn't slow down, result engine flooded, wouldn't start. i let it dry off the best i could in torrential rain for a couple of hours and it started but misfired. so i WD40'd the dizzy, ht leads spark plugs and down in where the spark plug is seated. now runs like a dream.

second that, give everything a wipe down, especially inside the connectors to the sparks and dizzy, quick squirt of wd in each of them and it should sort it... check for loose connectors too, and take each off, squirt and put it back..

Have u had it on a run?, i steam cleaned my old 1.6 engine once. It was misfiring and spluttering for a good half an or so whilst driving around accelerating threw the rev range, then it did stop.

being a smart arse, I jet washed my oily engine bay, whilst leaving the engine running to prevent problems, but still drove home on 3 cyls, found a spark plug core and ceramic had cracked under the cover, which lets water in, but wont dry out.
