jonand 0 Posted August 22, 2006 There's a host of info on here about modifying original equipment tachos and using 3rd party drivers, but can anyone suggest a reasonably priced aftermarket tacho that will work with the standard Motronic 3.2 ECU fitted to my S16. Mounting isn't important as my race car is not fitted with std dashboard. Suppliers I've spoken to so far have been unsure and have queried whether the ECU signal is 12v or 5v. Thanks Jon
sonofsam 5 Posted August 22, 2006 (edited) Jon i would imagine the ECU to receive 12v. I assumed wiring in an aftermarket tacho would require linking upto the coil packs..i could be completely wrong though! So if i am, someone will no doubt correct me thus giving you the correct answer Maybe a digital tacho could be installed using a signal from the VSS?? Also interested in this myself as I plan to fit one and we are using the same management. Sam. Edited August 22, 2006 by sonofsam

I though the VSS was measuring road speed ??. I cant believe this hasn't been done before. Jon
sonofsam 5 Posted August 24, 2006 Well, i just got hold of a very cheap Velleman digital RPM fully built meter.http://www.velleman.be/be/en/product/view/?id=9060 Part of the fitting info is: Connect "IN" Input to positive of breaker, this point is easily found as it is the only connecting point between the breaker and the coil. So no mention of the signal from the ECU being used an input im afraid. After doing a bit more research on this i found Pugtorque mention a Haltech sender, whether that converts the original signal im unsure of. May be able to help you out more once I've fitted it and got it working..we shall see Yeh i think your right about the VSS, but have heard of people using it to fire a becker Indianapolis wich contains a RPM gauge i beleive. jonand 0 Posted August 24, 2006 I think you will find that you need to connect via a series of diodes etc to pick up from the coil packs -if you are using idividual coil packs a la S16 the same as me. I think that he modules you refer to are signal converters to allow the original (analogue) tacho to run from the ecu signal. Neither of these approaches is what I want to do - I simply want to use an aftermarket tacho that will directly communicate with the ecu signal (no diodes, no converters etc). However, I would be interested to know if you get it going ok.
