ORB 227 1 Cars Posted August 19, 2006 Ok, sorry if this is the wrong section to be posting this, or if it has been asked 26 thousand times before but..... I have a 205 GTi 1.6 I only bought it a few days ago, went to look at the car, it had never been ran for ages, you could tell! So, the bloke asks me to bring a battery as he dont have one. I connect my batery up and boom, it fires up in an instant! Well pleased. The car is sound enough, but now i have the car home, I am getting a few problems. When cold (first thing in the morning) it fires straight up and runs well After I run it for a bit, and i try to start it again, its a real pig. Then sometimes when i get it fired up, it seems like its missing (only after its been run that day) Also, sometimes the Zorst stiks of fuel when trying to start? Another thing.... There is constantly a picture of a radiator lit up on the dash, even when its stone cold, what do i do? Can anyone advise me on these woe's and give me a list of things to check to remedy the problems. (I have put in new plugs today, new filters and dizzy cap and rotor arm with not a lot of improvement) Thanks ORB

It's the blue one on the exhaust side of the engine, flywheel end. This probably needs replacing. If it is faulty the engine will think it stone cold all of the time and overfuel. steve@cornwall 100 Posted August 19, 2006 cool, i will go get one tomorrow. any other ideas if not this as i want to try to get it sorted tomorrow as i dont get a lot of time off Ta Temp sensor gets my vote, change the oil afterwards as it's probably contaminated with fuel if it's smelling at the exhaust. Radiator symbol on dash either means you're low on coolant or the sensor in the expansion bottle is playing silly b*ggers!
nick 3 Posted August 19, 2006 The little radiator picture means "I'm thirsty, can I have some water please" Top the expansion tank up (passenger side rear of engine bay)If it's a black expansion tank they sometimes have a habit of flashing the warning light even when the coolant level is fine so just ignore it. Remember to put antifreeze in when topping up as pure water will corrode the water ways and eventually give you headgasket problems. Nick

Is it hard to change? Is it described in the Haynes Manual? cheers ORB

"the big plastic nut thingy" to the left of the filler cap with two wires going into it is the sender. Take off the wires and unscrew tee plastic nut and out it comes. Give it a good clean and try again (if I remember correctly there are some small holes in the sender that can block up- but I last played with one over 5 years ago!!) ORB 227 1 Cars Posted August 23, 2006 thanks guys. After a load of mucking about, i pulled the whole engie to bits. got a good look at the sensor and the plug and yes, some weener prior to me had 'sealed' it with silicone and got it all in the plug. Cleaned up with thinners and then a wash off and we are running again Thanks again
