Clunking Noises, Driveshaft?

Recommended Posts

:) Have just replaced my passenger lower arm as ball joint was clunking bad, I still have a clunking noise though mostly when I let off the accelerator when im going along, the passenger can feel it under the floor!

I will get down and look at it tomoro just wondered if anyone had any ideas?

Just put a new engine in it which had been sat a while and to my dissapointment when I got it in and turned it over it was only seized!! (teach me not to check first!) Spent hours freeing it, levering flywheel wd40 in plug and inlet holes tapping piston tops and one stupid stupid thing I did when losing my rag was to jack up the passenger side take the wheel off put the bolts back in the axle (2 of them) and then getting a bar inbetween those two bolts and trying to lever the engine through the driveshaft and gearbox, I had my whole body weight leaning and pushing on it at one point!

Anyway I eventually after about 5 hours freed it with the flywheel but Im really starting to wonder if I knackered the driveshaft trying to lever it like I did? It used to drive mint before I changed the engine and now feels a bit all over the road, the new arm has helped but its still not right and I swear this clunking is getting louder!?

Any ideas anyone!?!

check that all the subrame bolts are tight, even a slight looseness can cause a pretty bad clunk. I'd start with the two under the passengers feet if thats where it seems to be coming from.

Nope all the subframe bolts are tight, there is play in the track rod ends which I now have two replacements of and will fit tommorrow, but there is still this godamn clunking, I really think it might be the drive shaft joints, when sat in neutral sometimes I can now here like a rattling that seems to come from the shaft, it only clunks going along if I let off the accelerator quickly or brake hard, it clunks again slightly as you pull away, im really pickled and its starting to get really anoying and loud!!

sounds like engine mounts, would replace lower pendulum mount and gearbox mount, as possibly your gearbox is hitting subframe under accelration/ deceleration, would check play in engine movement before condemming though

engine mounts are definately fine its not a clunking of metal on metal and its def not the engine hitting the subframe, pretty sure its the driveshaft, will update you when I discover the problem but any suggestions welcome!?

I was reading an old Practical Classics article the other day about 205s and they mentioned that a clunking noise that sounds like worn CV joints could be imminent bearing failure in the diff, which if untreated, will wreck the gearbox. They say it's uncommon (I've certainly never heard of it happening!) but obviously noteworthy in a buyers guide :P:)

Food for thought!
