Recommended Posts

Guest Dee-STDT

Going to be servicing the 205 STDT soon and just wondering what grade & make/type of oil people are using in their diesels?? Should i use one that is for turbo diesel engines?

Thanks

I use Comma semi synthetic 10w40 diesel specific oil in mine. Changed every 3k.

I always Castrol GTD in my XUD engines...

Using other brands at the cheaper end of the spectrum is a false economy as they soon show signs of deterioration. This is especially true of an own-brand available at all branches of a well known high street motor accessory retailer.

I've heard that they are rebranded versions of one make mentioned above...

Given the economies of scale in oil I can't see how all the different brands have their own refinery...

:) Not sure Mr. Castrol would be happy with such a disclosure.

Care to mention any particular brands that are just rebranded GTD?

I meant Comma being rebranded as Halfrauds own brand...being too criptic for my own good.

I'm not sure what comma is a rebranded version of.

I use Motul semi-synthetic in all our cars; the 205, a 1.2 Clio & a diesel Scenic. Costs £20 for a 20 litre barrel from the Renault dealer parts place.

I do an oil & filter change every 1000 to 1500 miles on the 205 anyway; @ £9 a go! I'd rather put a decent oil in & change often than pay 4 to 6 times the price for a 'top brand' & keep it in much longer.

I used to use Castrol GTD magnatec (Halfords have it for £18 quite regularly) and changed oil and filter every 5k on my XUD7. I did have a reconned engine though, I'm not sure if high milage diesels have the same problems keeping hold of synthetic oil as petrols. The engine ran faultlessly without burning or leaking for 65k until I scrapped the car for other reasons.

12 oil changes at £18 plus £5 or whatever for the filter would be £276. The oil was never gritty, gloopy, thick or low.

At the full price of £27 a bottle it would be £384.

Mi16nut would have spent £360 over the same period at 1.5k intervals.

Magnatec isn't a fully synthetic oil afaik but mine has done just shy of 150k currently & burns hardly any oil (has a leaky rocker cover gasket & might benefit from some new cam seals).

I've done almost 30k in it since I bought it & have always used the same Comma oil with no problems.

Certainly Halfrauds was rebranded Comma at one time and years ago I used it with no problems. Then about two years ago I believe they changed supplier and it was (subjectively) not of the same quality.

I noticed in my old 405TD that it deteriorated very rapidly. I determined this by the fact that the oil on the dipstick did not form such a high and tight "blob" for want of a better description after only about 500 miles. Rather it sat rather flat with visible "holes".

Since swapping to GTD the "blob" remains nice right up until change time at 3K with hardly any consumption between changes on the Xantia.

A good sign for me is that when the oil in an XUD is really past it it makes the whole length of the dipstick black and again has that rather flat appearance.

Bitchass: In the 205 GTi I use GTX High Mileage at the moment but have previously used GTX and GTX Magnatec with good results.

Once when I used some cheap stuff I saw just how after just a few hundred miles hot oil pressure would fall off. GTX appears to keep a good hot oil pressure pressure to the 3K change point with very low consumption.

All very unscientific and very subjective I know :)

I only do @ 3k a year though & generally change before a track day, so it tends to average out at @ 1k & 8 quid per change. ;)
