veloce200 3 Posted August 17, 2006 My Offside caliper is not performing as Peugeot intended causing me to nearly lose the car twice when braking hard from speed. - caliper is clean and slides freely - pads are relatively new - handbrake works - new compensators fitted had it on the brake rollers and it is way down but does work, so much so you can now see the lack of brake dust on that rear wheel. just wondered if anyone had any suggestions before I buy a new one thanks Julian
Anthony 1,003 Posted August 17, 2006 Is it low effort on both the pedal and handbrake, or just the pedal?

t16ryan 1 Posted August 17, 2006 (edited) had one with a colapased brake hose? have you tried bleeding the rear brakes?? Edited August 17, 2006 by t16ryan
veloce200 3 Posted August 17, 2006 had one with a colapased brake hose? have you tried bleeding the rear brakes?? new braided lines and recently bled throughout ! I'm going to try moving the piston in and out and see if that makes any change.
Anthony 1,003 Posted August 17, 2006 pedal and handbrake - are you thinking partially seized piston? I'd go with it being something wrong with the caliper itself if both pedal and handbrake is low-effort - either a partly siezed piston, or the pads aren't running true with the disk for some reason. If it was something wrong with the hydraulic side (brakes lines, bleeding, MC) then the handbrake effort should be fine, and if it was something wrong with the handbrake then the pedal effort should be fine. For both to be low then it has to be something common, and that's basically the caliper or pads.

I took the disc off and gently pushed the piston out via the pedal - not too far. It didn't come out that quickly but improved as I repeated after winding back in. verdict - seems better but roller test is clearly in order.
TEKNOPUG 3 Posted August 18, 2006 Mine failed on the roller test although it wasn't noticeable whilst driving. In the end I just got a new caliper and fixed the problem.

I think as the effort on the rears is so little that any amount of seizing causes dodgy brake performance on the rears.
daza 0 Posted August 18, 2006 My car failed M.O.T on rear brakes and it needs a compensator, are they expensive and where is the best place to get them from i don't want to pay dealer prices?

I think as the effort on the rears is so little that any amount of seizing causes dodgy brake performance on the rears. The caliper had got lazy from lack of serious use. Everyone I've spoken to about rear discs has said the same thing, the need a proper heavy braking session once a week to keep them free or this kind of thing happens every MOT. Same goes for drums to a lesser extent. Graham.
