m.i-man 0 Posted August 16, 2006 The gate between 1st and reverse doesn't work... I've tried searching for the answer, but no topics that I have found have the answer I need. Is there something broken on the linkage somewhere? or is the cable stretched? (If they can, as I don't really know how these operate!). I've only ever had Be-3 boxes, and if I can't solve this, then I may think about converting it to a be-3.... at a last resort! Any ideas?
d-9 0 Posted August 16, 2006 what do you mean, doesnt work? You cant get reverse? or you dont have to lift the collar to get reverse?
steve@cornwall 100 Posted August 17, 2006 the plastic screw-in end of the lifter cable on top of the gear box can break- and hold the cable in the "lifted" position
m.i-man 0 Posted August 17, 2006 what do you mean, doesnt work? You cant get reverse? or you dont have to lift the collar to get reverse? Sorry, I can get reverse, but moe often than first.... which make it difficuilt sometime if you're in a rush! the plastic screw-in end of the lifter cable on top of the gear box can break- and hold the cable in the "lifted" position Will go have a look now. Cheers for the suggestion. Will let you know what happens.
Miles 331 1 Cars Posted August 17, 2006 Sounds like you;ve added a BE1 box in place of a BE3 without the cable, This will let you select reverse more than first. The cable act;s as a lock so this cannot happen, if it breaks it's failsafe
pug309twin40s 1 Posted August 17, 2006 nope its a phase 1 car with phase 1 gearstick and with the cable etc screwed in. just it goes straight into reverse without lifting the lever up. i'll check my cable tommorrow mate to see if theres anything missing of the end of yours. If the outer cable breaks it can stick with the inner cable in the open position when used, Happened to one of mine following an engine change when I broke the outer at it's entry to the 'box. Cable had a 90 degree kink and couldn't return to closed. Taped up it would function for a couple of days.
pug_ham 244 3 Cars Posted August 18, 2006 Obvious sense would be that if the cable breaks then you can't get reverse, m@tt had this when his homemade quickshift gear stick snapped & he fitted a Be3 stick temporaily. He had no release for the lockout cable so couldn't reverse. But I suppose it can also stick up & there be no lockout mechanism. Graham.
jackherer 543 Posted August 18, 2006 many years ago I borrowed a mk1 1.1 fiesta that was like this, I remember queuing at a roundabout then when I tried to pull away I got reverse three times in a row and the person behind me had to reverse in case I drove towards him again
m.i-man 0 Posted August 19, 2006 I still haven't managed to get round to looking at it properly. I shall get some photos up on sunday so the more experienced person can tell me if bits are missing or not. Cheers for the input guys.
