Guest Dee-STDT Posted August 14, 2006 Sorry if i'm posting in the wrong place! driving the diesel home last night the car started making this awful loud grinding noise, it sounded as if it was coming from the rear of the car. we pulled over in the services but found no obvious factors to why it would be making the noises, it's a constant grinding noise and only stops when the car is at a standstill. any ideas to what this could be?? and ideas would be great. cheers Dee. pug309twin40s 1 Posted August 14, 2006 sound like a rear wheel bearing has gone. jack rear of car up then spin the wheel if it doesnt spin freely and make louds of noise then its the bearing thats shot. and wobble the wheel so if it seems solid or wobbles abit. If it is the bearing then replace both sides bearings as usually if 1 side goes the other side will follow shortly after.

jim21070 2 Posted August 14, 2006 are they quite easy to replace? is it something i'd find in a haynes manual? Haynes covers it in its usual fashion and from their perspective it looks quite easy. You'll need a method of pressing the old bearings out and the new ones in and despite what Mr. Haynes may say, they're a pretty tight fit. Ideally you need a hydraulic press but a big vice and suitably sized sockets as mandrels will do the job. Some large, stout washers, aformentioned sockets and some M12 studding and nuts will also serve to extract and replace the bearings. Note that once a bearing is extracted, it is scrap, even if it was good before. Also, the hub nut is jolly tight on the stub axle and should be replaced with a new one.
