Rad Position In Mi16 Conversion

Recommended Posts

jerseypug

just driven the car for the first time after fitting the mi16 engine, takeing it easy and only a 40mph speed limit over here. the fan cuts in quite often and as i have lowered the rad only half the fan is actually blowing on the rad. would it be wise to connect up the 2nd fan as it will be used as a rally car or is there a way of lowering the fan cowling?

Most people just grind some of the radiator cowling away, so the radiator can tilt forward to allow for the the inlet manifold.

The conversion article is on the main site

Inlet manifold: You can move the radiator forward a bit by grinding the fan shroud down

I ground the fan and radiator surround so that the radiator sat close to the surround. It still uses the original locating slots at the bottom so I have, in effect, tilted the radiator forward by about 15mm at the top. A simple modification to the radiator retaining springs (shortening them) meant that it still fitted in the proper way

I think what hes saying is that he has actually lowered the radiator itself hence the fan is only covering the top half.

I think when most people lower the radiator they use a slimline fan or similar and get rid of the cowling using some brackets to mount the fan.

Im not sure what your best approach is using the standard rad cowling though. Im sure some of the lads that use lowered radiators will be able to tell you though.

with the help of base1 this afternoon i ripped half my gti apart. the aircon condenser sits right in the fan shroud, but because of this theres 2 brackets witch appeer to raise and move the rad toward the inlet! however it looks totally reversable, and not hard to extend the bracket to lower it several inches!

with regards to your shroud covering half the rad, id guess a second fan would improve it, but also why not blank off above the rad in such a way u direct airflow from the whole fan down to the rad...

This is what I did using just a sheet of ally and some rubber to stop it rattling. Works fine and costs less than a new fan.
