Batfink 201 Posted August 13, 2006 My car was having an intermittent starting problem where the starter would not turn. (electrics/ignition worked etc) Now the battery tested fine with a multimeter (12.7 reading) I stuck some jump leads to the battery and the car started which indicated the battery was failing under load. I've bought a new battery and the car is aok now for future reference how can you properly test a battery to see whether it fails under load? Would you have to disconnect the alternator and then take a reading???
pugrallye 0 Posted August 13, 2006 proper way is to use a drop tester, but for the home mechanic they are a waste of money really, easiest way is to crank the starter and measure the drop, no need to unplug the alternator as its not doing much when cranking
ablister 31 Posted August 13, 2006 maybe take it to a local garage and see if they'll do a battery drop test for you
