Piston Rings

Recommended Posts

i got some piston rings a few weeks back and i've just found out they're the wrong ones..

does anyone have any clue which ones they've given me ?

my top piston ring is 1.38mm thick, theres is 1.65mm, it almost looks chromed and its a different shape

my middle piston ring is 1.44mm, theres 1.63mm

my bottom one is solid with the spring inside but theres is two rings loose and a spring, this is the only bit that fits my piston

i gave them details of my engine code and number, so they shouldnt have gave me the wrong ones i would have thought..

cheers for any help

They look ok to me, similar to the ones I fitted to mine.

Not sure on thickness. Surely as long as they fit in the recesses in the piston they will be fine, and the thickness I would have thought will just make them better.

It would probably help if you also gave us a clue about which engine you have.

However, the rings you have been given are 1.75mm x 1.75mm x 4mm. Those are for an XU5S carb engine or the XU52C cat engine.

Yours would appear to be 1.5mm x 1.5mm x 4mm. The normal 1.6 Gti XU5J engine. Tell them that and you'll get the right ones next time.

Then they definitely gave you the wrong rings. However it's always best to tell a parts supplier your actual ring thicknesses too as there are several variants and no guarantee that your engine has not been rebuilt in the past with non OE pistons. Depending on year and engine size the 83mm bore engines can have the following.

1.5 x 1.5 x 4mm

1.75 x 1.75 x 4mm

1.5 x 1.5 x 3mm

Some of the pistons are otherwise nearly identical in terms of height and the dish on top so it's possible to rebuild an engine with different rings than it left the production line with.

Blow me if the same thing's happened to me. Identical rings as well, "AE" brand.

They'll have to go back, but I notice the middle ring is identical to the top one, ie both compression.

The ones out of the car, which are original, are top is compression, middle is a scraper, ie it's similar to the top ring but has a groove on the lower face where it meets the liner.

I've had 3 liners honed & bought one new liner as the fourth was rust pitted. So ... am I Ok going for the 2 plain ring scenario, or should I stick with the original design (presumably only available from Peugeot?).
