Help What To Do With My 1.9 Gti

Recommended Posts

Guest bristol-stevie

hi

I have a 1.9 GTI it has a s/s backbox and has been lowered apart from that its

standard, I have been told a stnadard exhaust would be better than just the backbox

I have is this true?

I am thinking of giving the car a good service, changing the filter to a k & n panel

filter full pugsport grp n exhaust GTI 6 brakes strut brace, and maybe a uprated

manifold and maybe look at cams!

Does this sound like a good idea?

If not what should I do as I dont have a clue about engines!!! lol !!!!

I want to aim towards about 150 bhp without a engine transplant!!

Please help a novice!!!

Steve

You're best doing a search for engine tuning as there is loads of posts on this. But in most peoples opinions, your best upgrading brakes and suspension first!

You might want to start with the 205 tuning article on my website.

Have a search around the site for idea's but I would leave the Gp'N' system well alone, It's a smaller dia than the Phase 2's but the main thing is, it's not very resistant to rust,

A cam a head work is needed to get the 150bhp your after

i can say that value for money upgarde would be a strut brace, i picked one up s/hand for my gti and it helps a lot. turn in is a lot more precise. a suspension kit also, i went for an adjustable spax kit (join the PGAC and order one from spax direct for a good deal!) many people like the Bilstines tho i have never tried them. i was looking fro around 160bhp from my 1.9 8valve gti engine, like u are, went into the cost of it all and the MI16 looked more and more tempting(thanks to the guys on this forum!! ) so look into it! i have also fitted a K+N fitler kit (just makes a nice noise) a magnex manifold and system (recomended tho expensinve if not s/hand) and FSE boost guage (not much good!).

hope u manage to sus it out!

Ps. nice to see another Pug enthusiast in Bristol!

matt.

I am personally finding the standard brakes are fine - albeit I am running steel braided hoses, with mintex M1144 pads all round - and that is the car I use for hillclimbing.

If you want the car to be a lot more fun I would spend money on the suspension (not necesssarily aftermarket stuff) and just make sure all the bushes are fine and the rear beam is in good nick. My car was absolutely transformed even on standard suspension with just new drop links, wishbone bushes and a new rear beam.

The engine is pretty expensive to get decent power out of unless you want to keep it to compete in hillclimbing or sprintng at a later date.
