Replacement Of Brown Multiplug Fro Sensor Loom

Recommended Posts

GLPoomobile

After doing some engine work recently I realised a couple of the wires from the brown multiplug that links the sensors and starter and alternator to the loom had come out due to corrosion. As I needed a quick fix and don;t know anything about crimping wires back into these blocks, I decided to cut the brown multi block off completely and temporarily solder all the wires together.

The problem was that every single wire, once the insulation had been stripped back, was a sort of dull grey colour. Like the wire was dirty. Every single wire refused to accept solder making it virtually impossible to solder them back together. I eneded up crimping the wires back together, which has worked for now bar a non functioning oil pressure guage.

What is the best way to fix this for good? Can you get new multi blocks and how does one refit the wires into them?

Why was it impossible to 'tin' the wires? I can accept one dirty wire but they were all fubbar! It was as if the wire had rotten ;)

I used the following to replace the multi-plug on mine:

Connectors

These allow you to crimp the cables. Just take your time with crimping and you should have no problems, in short no real need to solder.

While you are at it I would also replace the starter solenoid cable that runs under the inlet manifold while you are at it, given they are usually on the way out by now.

Hope this helps.

For use in the engine bay (infact anywhere on the car) I always prefer to crimp because soldering makes the wires brittle & they can break.

The connectors Sorr linked to are best & you can fit new wire from that connector for all the multiplug wires rather than having fun trying to find some decent wire on the existing loom.

Next time I take my engine out I'll be fitting new wires & a new plug for the engine loom.

So of the products on that page, which would be best to replace the brown multiplug with?

Use the Multi-connectors 6.3mm - From memory, so could be wrong, I used the 8 way as there are 7 cables on the multiplug and left one terminal blank.

Except for when you do an engine swap & have to mark the wires individually rather than just unplugging the connector & swapping them over off the car. B)
