Ignition Timing

My engine underwent a rebuild late last year and due to a few shipping issues and a tight deadline the vernier pulley was never fitted (270 degree cam + headwork) the car hasnt really been on the road at all since so i never really got it set up at all. the fueling has never been quite right either.

 

id like to know how much of a negative effect the ignition timing and fueling could have on the cars performance? i do plan to fit ther vernier before i head to uni next month but the car is feeling a little sluggish ATM.

Well when I picked my current car up the ignition was retarded as far back as it would go. the engine didnt want to rev at all, it would get there eventually but it really struggled, It also caused the engine to heat up quicker than it should. setting the timing up properly made a massive difference.

I have seen a bike engine we had at uni with the exhaust glowing bright red on the dyno at 4krpm just because the ignition was set far too advanced. It is very easy to burn valves and stuff in those sort of situations. So I would say that the ignition timing can have a very big effect on the engine if it is well out not just the usual pinking problems.

i have seen a 205 gti that was pinking its nuts off,

my mate was playing with the dizzy

did not know what the hell he was doing and is a bit of an arguementive person so would not listen to advice from me and others to retard it as he could do serious damage.

the reason he would not was that he felt it made a fault that was fuel related feel better!

two days later it had a hole in a piston and a messy conrod as alot of the molten material had drip on to the conrod!

 

he then started to listen well sort of!!!

Should be more worried about the effect it'll have on the engine itself mechanically, rather than performance IMO.

 

Retarded timing will incur heat build up which isn't great for bearings, seals or valves particularly. It will also mean a large amount of unburnt fuel will be swilling around in your oil, oil dilution is NOT good for bottom end bearings.

 

Advanced timing will cause detonation which will eat at your pistons and valves/valve seats and can lunch engines quite easily (less so on N/A cars but still).

 

Both will increase load on the crank and bottom end bearings due to incorrect timing of combustion sending a shock down the rods
