pee vee 1 Posted August 10, 2006 hi all just wondering what oil would be best to go for for track day use? (1900 8v) also, any other tips for track day perp? the car is in Pretty good shape, so im guessing just checks for levels ETC? thanks!
hengti 2 Posted August 10, 2006 is it a dedicated track car, or an occasional visitor? if it's an occasional thing, i'd just go with usual 10/40 unless you're sure it's in good nick, give it a really thorough going over at service too - esp. the brakes and suspension. 30psi in the tyres all round is alright. take all the clutter out of the car too (spare wheel, boot gubbins etc), keep atleast half a tank of fuel in it at all times to avoid fuel surge. hmm - what else ... pee vee 1 Posted August 10, 2006 Just occasional really. will drop the oil before hand as im not sure what is in there at the mo. thanks for the tip about fuel too!!
smckeown 1 Posted August 10, 2006 i'd go with good discs, good pads (something for occasional track would be feroddo ds2500), braided hoses and 5.1 fluid.
Rippthrough 98 Posted August 10, 2006 I'd take a little oil and water just in case. And plenty of fuel.
feb 47 Posted August 10, 2006 (edited) I had 32 psi at the front and 30 at the back during my first track day and experienced a lot of understeer on the tight bends despite the car having a Quaife. I may have been a bit over enthusiastic . The sidewalls of the front tyres were worn almost until the letters.. What pressures do others use? Make sure the oil is filled up to the max and water is ok too. have regular breaks and don't engage the handbrake when you park as the rear pads may get stuck to the disc from the excessive heat. The track boys should be able to offer more tips Enjoy and you will get addicted after your first one!! Edited August 10, 2006 by feb
Miles 331 1 Cars Posted August 11, 2006 Pressures vary from track to track and what the weather is like, A basic dry setting is 26 front and 28>29 at the back, the fronts will get hotter quicker as your aiming to get the temps all the same by the end of the session, Adjust to suit your driving style and make sure the rear tyres are being used, A few people pump the rears up hard 34psi which I'm not a fan of

Removing superfluous stuff (spare wheel, crap in boot, passenger and rear seats) will make a hell of a difference - this is why racers spend a fortune on making cars as light as possible. As for fluids, make sure they are topped up. No point checking them unless the car gets *completely* cold after a session, and that includes tyres - on our race car the pressures are still higher than originally set the morning after a race. Watch out for idiots as well, of which there are sadly many - if you are coming up to someone who simply doesn't want to be passed, take the 'discretion is the better part of valour' approach, back of for a lap find a space, then go for it! I guess the car will be oversteering with 26 front / 29 back?
t16ryan 1 Posted August 12, 2006 iran 26 psi all round (cold) as soon as you do a few laps they soon increase due to heat.
feb 47 Posted August 12, 2006 (edited) iran 26 psi all round (cold) as soon as you do a few laps they soon increase due to heat. i put 32 in mine when cold and when i measured it hot it was around 36 iirc.... i have to experiment with lower pressures next time. smckeown 1 Posted August 12, 2006 you want consistent pressures on 4 tyres, so setting the same when cold is not good. Set the fronts 2-3 psi lower than the rear, that should make them consistent when warm
