Drive Shaft Bearing Thing Came Off The End Of The Driveshaft

Recommended Posts

right, abit hard to explain this one but...

when i was doing some work a couple of weeks ago, the driveside cv fell apart on me. what happened is:

you know inside the cv theres the bit which fits onto the splines of the shaft and carries the 3 bearings enabling it to rotate its different ways. well, it came off and the shaft must of placed itself amongst the bearings.

after a fiddle about i managed to get it back in and working ok but now i think its coming back to haunt me as sometimes when turning and accelerating, it makes the occasional knock.

ive got hold of a few circlips and was intending to have a look at it tomoro to see if i could put a circlip back on to replace the one that must of fallen off.

can anyone shed some light on this to see if i only need to put a new circlip on or does the plock thicken?

Will

did the spider come out the outer cv joint? or did your drive shaft come out the spider (retained by a c clip) if the spider has come out then its probably shot by now...

As said, if its started knocking sounds like its worn. Is it worth trying to fix for the price of a new one from somewhere like GSF?

If the bearings on the end of the tripod joint fell apart, did you get all of them back in when you refitted the outer races? I had a similar thing to this happen on one of my old diesels 205's & that knocked occasionally but not to often.

In honesty a replacement driveshaft is probably best.

well, ive been driving on it for a couple of weeks and its doesnt sound like the noise you get when a drive shaft is worn.

i dont think the bearings have fallen off, i just think it was the spider bit that came off the end of the shaft. going to have a look later today hopefully and see whats what. do hope its fixable for a while. other wise im stuck in wales for abit.Doh!

That tripod needs to be pinned off on the shaft. Depending on which driveshaft you have there will either be a circlip that holds it from coming off ( there will be a groove in the splines to hold the circlip) or if there is no groove, you need to push the tripod all the way down on the splines and you a chisel or a center punch to burr the splines to stop it from coming back off.
