Henry Yorke 269 3 Cars Posted August 9, 2006 I have swopped the gearbox in my CTI for a longer ratio's Mi box with a 1.9 final drive to reduce the wheel spin and stop my left arm looking like a tennis players as I fight through the gears! On fitting the box, the speedo reads approx 15mph less than I am actually going. this is due to running 405 speedo gears on the end of the gearbox. To save taking the drive shaft out, removing the diff casing and changing the speedo drives, cal I fit a 405 speedo backing with odometer to the back of my GTI clocks? In theory this will give me the correct readings and save me a load of agro! Surely people with Mi boxes in 205's must have similar problems if they have not changed the speedo gears Thoughts? pug_ham 245 3 Cars Posted August 10, 2006 I've got a 405 gearbox on mine & haven't changed any of the speedo gears & it reads fine on 205 clocks. If you know your rev counter is reading correctly you can (approximately) work out what speed you should be doing at any indicated rpm on this site but i also think some of the other pug gearing sheets can give you the same calculations. Depending on the age of 405 you get the speedo from I think it should fit (older is better). I know NickR fitted the rev counter from the clocks from my donor 405 into his 205 clocks so I guess the speedo shoud also fit. Graham.
BuD 0 Posted August 11, 2006 You probably know this but its not much hassle once the driveshaft is removed, just 3 bolts to take the speedo drive housing off and the cog just pushes in to a slot on the diff.
littlemike 0 Posted August 11, 2006 You don't need to change both parts of the speedo drive, only the small plastic gear that's on the end of the cable itself. No need to drain any oil or take the driveshaft out.
Henry Yorke 269 3 Cars Posted August 11, 2006 So I can just pull the spedo cable out of the top of the box, change the plastic gear on the end and push it back in and the new gear will mate fine with whatever is on the end of the driveshaft in the diff housing?? welshpug 1,675 Posted August 19, 2006 I'd definitely do the work on the gearbox as the dash is a right pain to get apart and even worse to put back together properly. and the you need to get the steering wheel back on centre...
Henry Yorke 269 3 Cars Posted August 25, 2006 Cheers for the replies littlemike. So all I need to find now is the right one to pop back in!! Having a look here http://www.stuartmcguire.co.uk/pug/GB/205N/2/26D15A.HTM It seems it is the control pinion (part number 2 on the diagram) that I need. I am guessing for the part descriptions of the 3 options that the nn DTS refers to the number of teeth/spirals on the control pin. Anyone got any experience of what number of teeth on the control pinion I would need for a standard GTI speedo cluster etc? I am guessing I must be running a 19 toothed one as that is what it says for a 405 here .......bugger, I have just realised that there are 2 Tachometer Screws (that fit on the driveshaft), a 19 and a 22 toothed one However it seems that the 22 toothed one is black so I should be able to spot which it is. Also the fact it is under reading indicates that this is most likely the one I have on the end of my driveshaft. soooooooooooo....... based on the above logic and the info here on the late 405 box I know it is late because of the diff problems I had before, I think I need a black 19 DTS Control Pinion. Can anyone confirm my logic?!!! p.s. does the fact that the 405 runs a greater rolling diameter (205/50/15) versus a 205 (with 195/50/15) have a significant difference on the gearing? Should I be going for the 17 DTS Control Pinion?!!! p.p.s. I bet this is one of those threads that now dies a death as it is complicated!!!
