SPGTi 2 Posted August 8, 2006 In every gear when you hit 3k rpm the car begins to stutter and doesn't want to pull, once past 3.5k rpm it pulls like a train again. 1.9 8v. Any ideas ? Steve
SweetBadger 94 Posted August 8, 2006 Sounds like a dodgy bit of track on your AFM if it always happens at the same point in the rev range, have you re-tracked it yet?
Butler 0 Posted August 8, 2006 Is the rev counter erractic during this point?
SPGTi 2 Posted August 8, 2006 AFM retracked on rolling road (2 of them) ! Rev counter doesn't seem erratic, normal up to 3k, then a bit jerky but follows the engine up to 3.5k, and then fine again. Steve
Man3 0 Posted August 9, 2006 Ignition amp? I had symptoms just like this, took me ages to find out that it was the ignition amp. Make sure you use some heat transfer paste when replacing it.
SPGTi 2 Posted August 10, 2006 I will try changing the ign amp then. Bets place to get it from and part no ?? Is it what GSF call ign. module and would I need 5 or 7 pin ? Steve
Hilgie 16 2 Cars Posted August 10, 2006 yes that is the ignition module and should be labeled MTR01.
saveloy 8 Posted August 10, 2006 I would not bother with the ignition amp. The amp works harder with revs,so it is not likely to be causing your problem. Pull off the AFM lid and physically check the track. Try holding the revs at 3K and see what is going on in the AFM.
mos 1 Posted August 10, 2006 hi, i had this about 8 years ago on my first gti. it turned out to be the ignition amp wiring plug and a dirty connector. i only solved it after changing the ignition amp for a second time and cleaning the connector plug. about 6 months after this i mentioned it to a local rolling road operator i was at. he said it was quite common apparently on 205/309s and he had seen it a few times. he said that what was happening on the move the ecu was picking up an incorrect signal from the ignition module (either due to it being faulty or a bad connection) and was tricking the ecu into activating the rev limiter, hence why the car struggled. but it would clear once you were through a narrow 200-300rpm rev band at about 3,500rpm, then would pull cleanly to the true rev limit. obviously i cant say if this was 100% accurate but i do remember it made alot sense to me at the time. i changed to carbs about 3 months later and did away with the ecu so it was no longer a problem for me hope this helps mark
SPGTi 2 Posted August 29, 2006 Changed the ignition amp and the car now pulls cleanly right through the rev range . Steve
