davemar 16 Posted August 8, 2006 I'm still trying to get to the bottom of some knocking sounds I'm get when going around corners. It is particularly noticeable when straighening up and powering away from right-handers. I initially suspected a driveshaft and replaced the left-hand one, as the noise seemed to come from that side of the car. However the noise didn't seem to go away, unless the driveshaft has worn pretty much instantly. I've taken the whole front suspension apart, renewing the top-mount bearings on the suspension struts, and the two lower arms. I also checked the ARB bushes and they were fine. I checked the subframe bolts and the gearbox mounting and they were all secure. I really can't think much of what's left that can move!?! Could it be the other driveshaft, and the direction of the sound is misleading?
pugrallye 0 Posted August 8, 2006 is it knocking while you are physically turning the steering wheel? or just when you have some lock applied and held?
davemar 16 Posted August 11, 2006 I'm pretty sure when I'm holding it on a particular lock, though I can't be 100% sure. I'll have to check that one.
matty_gti 20 Posted August 11, 2006 Im back to driving my 1.1 TU at the moment as im rebuilding my 1.6 engine, soon to be a 1.9 for my GTi. When i started driving my 1.1 a year ago there was allways the slight rolling knocking noise like when pulling out of corners and straighting up as you have described but i never gave it a second thought as i didnt know alot about cars. When i started driving my 1.6, is was silent.......then soon after...the dreaded rolloing knocking noise in the same situations . Now im back to my 1.1....its even worse I have been told by a few people that is the drive shafts or CV joints, i had both mine coming from the passenger side. Hope that helps. davemar 16 Posted August 14, 2006 I replaced the left-hand driveshaft not so long ago, and the problem didn't really seem to go away; though it is difficult to say whether it was less worse. Possibly I bought a duff driveshaft, but I can't imagine it and it certainly looked fine when I removed it the other day. Maybe the right-hand one is causing the noise, and it's an illusion that it's coming from the other side.
