SweetBadger 94 Posted August 8, 2006 I have noticed a bit of a knocking from my suspension when cornering over rough ground so assumed it to be the wishbone ball joints or droplinks however when I was changing the brake calipers from bendix to girling ones (much better) I couldn't feel any play when pulling on the hubcarriers. There is play was between passenger side disc/hub and the hub carrier. I've made sure the hub nut is as tight as I can get it and this doesn't help so I'm guessing this is a shot wheel bearing. Only thing is I would have thought there'd been a more obvious sign of the bearing failing i.e noise griding noises etc... Anyway I don't have anywhere to put the car while the hub carrier is off so I need to get a replacement hub/wheel bearing. Is it worth getting a second hand hub carrier and replacing the wheel bearing as a matter of course before swapping it or shall I just swap the bugger for a known good one as I thought wheel bearings are fairly reliable parts. pugpete1108 62 1 Cars Posted August 8, 2006 have you checked all the ball joints , the drop links (top and bottom) , the wishbone one and the track rod one , i had this problem on mine and changed the wishbone /drop link but found it was the track rod end that had gone causing it to knock over bumps. cant see it being a bearing unless it is making noise all the time. if you get a new hub it is worth fitting a new bearing as they are quite cheap , if not a bit tricky to fit ( read pain in the arse). but not immposible. Yeah although a bit mucky everything seems nice and tight, the thing is when I shake the hub-carrier there is no play, but when I shake the disc/hub there is some obvious movement. Yeah I thought so... Had another look at it last night and the play is due to the wheel bearing, picking up some good 1.6 hubs and lower arms on monday so hopefully that'll cure the problem. I also noticed a bit of side to side play (about 10mm) which I think is due to play in the stering column as the track rod ends seem fine. Is this normal or should I start looking at a new column? Really didn't plan on doing a total rebuild of this car but its getting on for it! Share this post Link to post Share on other sites
