Confused - Which Hoses Go Where?

Recommended Posts

Guest DocBurble

Having suffered a major coolant loss just before a 3hr drive, I'm now trying to sort out the leak. While scavenging a spare hose off my 1.6 I noticed a slight difference.

Facing the car, bonnet up, if you look down the back of the engine on the left hand side there are two coolant hoses.

On my 1.9 the left hand hose goes up to the heater inlet with a bleed screw in it.

On my 1.6 the left hand hose goes across the bulkhead to the expansion tank.

Which is correct?

Could this be causing my high running temps?

Thanks

On mine, the hose (the one with the bleed valve) goes from the back of the SAD block to the top heater matrix spigot. The hose from the bottom heater spigot goes to the water distribution block on the bottom left-hand side of the block by the driveshaft centre bearing, as does the thick hose from the bottom of the expansion bottle.

Yes, if wrong it could be causing high running temps.

Yes it's the water distribution block I'm talking about - on my 1.6 the LH pipe gose to the expansion tank on my 1.9 (the car with the problem) the LH pipe goes to the heater matrix coming through the bulkhead.

I'm not sure if there is a difference between 1.6 7 1.9.

Can you confirm where the LH pipe on your block goes?

Unless I'm much mistaken it shouldn't make a scrap of difference which way round those pipes are connected. The two pipes on the back of that coolant housing are just connected directly together, so there's no difference in function between them. Connect the hoses whichever way is easiest / least tangled / least likely to rub on anything (the hose to the expansion tank used to rub against the steering UJ on my car, was very nearly worn through before I noticed it).

As far as I'm concerned you are spot on, Jonah. If you have nice new moulded hoses then it's fairly obvious which way they go round in order to acheive a nice clear pipe run too.

That's exactly what's happened! Rubbed through by the UJ hence my question about location.
