Scary Torque Steer - Dont Think Its Wishbones - Help

Recommended Posts

Guest Red Man

Have read the various posts over the last month and thought it would be a simple renewal of the wishbone bushes.

However, having taken both wheels off, and checked I cannot detect any play in the wishbones, either at the bushes or at the ball joints. I presume when they go it is obvious, i.e. you can get them to wobble by hand?

Anyway I did happen to notice that on the drivers side the anti roll bar link arm had about 5mm of play up and down at the bottom, i.e. where it connect to the anti roll bar. There is no play on the other side. Could this be the cause of the problem - trust me the erratic steering is very prounounced, under acceleration of decceleration when going in a straight line.

How easy are they to replace and do I need a separator tool as noted by Haynes?

Cheers guys - I really need to get this sorted.

Well I've had the drop link off the suspension end with just a few taps from a hammer...

Not sure it is te cause of your torque steer but clearly isn't right. I've got a torque steer issue myself so am interested ot hear your progress.

Well to report on progress

Just replaced the drop link and as best I can tell it has cured the problem - no more sudden pulls left (on acceleration) or right (on decceleration) whilst on the straights at high speed.

The drop link I replaced was the drivers side -this was the only change I made on the basis of try one thing at a time. Anyway the roll bar bushes looked ok and there was no play in the wishbones so they would have been a longer shot anyway.

By the way the Peugeot dealer drop links are extortionate - even they agreed at £88 each plus VAT. Instead I got a couple of new links of ebay, the pair costing just £30 plus postage. They seem pretty good quality. You can get single drop links as cheaply as £10 each, which means you can afford to replace them, even if they are lessor quality.

Just one tip when taking the old link off. The bolt rotates, so you need to hold it somehow. But if you look carefully you will see the bolt is drilled to take a hexagon headed bit - which you inasert to hold the bolt whilst you take the nut off. Actually I did not find this until I had taken mine off, resorting instead to mole wrench and angle grinder!! This might help somebody avoid the same mistake.
