Gearbox Best Suited To A 1.9 8v Hillclimb Car?

Recommended Posts

Guest Megster

I'm looking for an improved gearing setup for my 1990 1.9 hillclimb/sprint car. I need better pull out of slow uphill corners and top speed isn't really important. I spend most of my time in 1st, 2nd and 3rd - there are only a handfull of occassions where the car gets near to 100mph each season. The car has a SBC "S" spec head, standard bottom end and box, fifteen inch rims and twin 45s making 154bhp. She is very rarely used on the road.

I've done a search and there's a lot of good info on this board, but I'm still confused! :(

Thanks - Alun

PS - The corner below is fairly typical of what I'm looking for extra pull out of...

your best bet is probably to change the final drive on your existing box, to either a 1.6 or an Mi16 one (although the latter may be too extreme).

do you have an lsd?

No LSD yet. Intend to fit one whilst gearbox is out.

Retain 1st to 5th and go for the 4.43:1 with an LSD. The 4:06 is far too long for hill climbs. Even the 4:43:1 can fall off the boil, even with a healthy Mi16 engine. If you've got the cash, go for a 4.8:1.

Go for 1.9 box with MI16 CWP (what PeterT said). On my 1.9 8v this gives around 105mph on the limiter in 5th. The pull in every gear is good esp. when you hit 3rd at full chat.

I was lucky to get a 4.8 for £200 s/h and it's great, but probably not worth the extra if you had to buy one new. However if you're only a couple of tenths of the person in front.....

The cheapest option is the 1.6 or 1.9 box with the Mi16 Final drive, As said if you can find a 4.8 CWP get one of those and a Plate type LSD
