Pugwebgeek 0 Posted August 5, 2006 Just replaced the starter motor so took off the inlet manifold etc to get at it. All back together again but when I fire the engine up there is an unholy amount of screeching . I've removed the alternator belt so it's not that. Anyone got any ideas?? On another (but perhaps related) point, there was a fair bit of mayonaise in the oil filler cap. I only did a new head gasket about 3000 miles ago and haven't noticed anything untoward. I checked all the breather hoses and they seem fine so I gave it a rinse in white spirit and put it back on. Could the mayo be a sign of head gasket problem and the whine be related to it?? I'm stumped. Colin
Pugwebgeek 0 Posted August 5, 2006 water pump bearing? It was new about 6 months ago but I'll have a look. I guess if I take off the cam belt and spin the water pump I'll soon know if it's that!! Col
Pugwebgeek 0 Posted August 5, 2006 Just had a thought. The engine only fires up for a couple of minutes then just dies. That doesn't sound like a bearing issue. Sounds kind of fuel or cylinder pressure related. Anyone got any ideas?? Col
Pugwebgeek 0 Posted August 24, 2006 Right I've found the problem. I've basically been an idiot. I decided to take the inlet manifold off again which I had to do before for the starter motor. That's when I saw the thin washer on the stud between the engine and the manifold. I'd obviously dropped it when doing the starter motor job then popped it on the stud for safe keeping, put the new gasket on before taking it off and tightened it all back up. The screeching I guess was the air being sucked in from the thin gap between the engine and gasket or manifold and gasket. Lesson learnt the hard way. She's as right as rain now and singing along just beautifully. Col
