Diesel Crank For 2.1/2.2 Litre Conversion

Recommended Posts

mos

hi,

been speaking to a number of engine builders over the past week or so (including a couple of company's associated with this forum) about the 2.1/2.2 litre bottom end for my 2.0 mi/s16 block.

most are willing to take on the project, but prefer me to have already sourced the crank.

1.9 mi16 cranks are very difficult to come by (i havn't managed to find a single one!)

so i though i may use an 1.9 8v crank.

couple of the engine builders suggested that diesel cranks (which are much more plentyful apparanetly) may be a better solution, anyone any thought or reccommendations on this or which particular crank to use

thanks

I'm using a 92mm XUD11 crank for my engine build, keep an eye out for a post relating to it in the coming months.

yeah basically you can use any xu9 crank, diesel, 1.98v etc.

You can use also the the xud11 crank which is a longer stroke still but is much more hassle.

i think i will be using the xu9 crank as i want to keep the engine as square as possible, i was going to over bore to 87mm but after reading on here that you can overbore safely to 88mm and having checked in the cometic catolgue that they do an 88mm gasket this is now looking more likely.

do you continue to use the same conrod length when you do this conversion and do you deck the s/mi16 2ltr block at all?

thanks

Apparantly not all blocks will take 88mm bore, but I believe S16 to be one of the blocks that can (I think the casting difference lies between blocks with oil-squirters under piston and not).

BTW if you go 88mm bore, tell Cometic to make the gasket 88.5mm (this was the biggest they could make it they told my) so you're sure the pistons will not hit the gasket if you make them come over deck to optimize squish, I had to grind out my gasket a little.

Shouldn't be a problem decking it, I've decked mine so pistons 88mm sit 0.3mm over the deck.

That's with 88mm bore and 94.5mm stroke, but the combustionchambers are opened up a little bit from 40cc to 44cc to get a reasonable compression ratio (11.6:1).

problem with using an 8 valve crank is it is not fully counter balanced.

the block i have does have the oil squirters

does this mean it is one of the type of blocks that is ok for this project or not?

thanks
