Mi16 Distributor Caps

My 205 Mi16 died in a petrol station and now wont restart. Occassionally it runs (and runs well) then suddenly cuts again.

 

I did the usual testing and found I had no spark, so I connected a plug to the coil lead and had a strong spark so I bought a new cap and arm. Fitted these and its the same, no spark after the cap. So I put the new cap/arm/leads on another Mi16 and they work fine, put them back on my Mi16 and no spark.

 

So something about my engine is making the cap and/or arm not work?

 

anyone got any ideas as I've run out?

Pull the rubber boot off the ign coil and see if the wires are ok, mine were pretty dead looking when I had funny symptoms like this.

I actually replaced the whole ignition section of the loom today, but it didnt make any difference. I've tried different coils and ignition amps too. And TDC sensors.

 

Like I say there is a strong spark if I put a plug straight into the lead from the coil, its only when I plug it into a lead from the distributor cap that I get no spark .

 

could there be a mechanical fault with the cam or the plate the rotar arm screws to? I unscrewed the large torx screw that holds this plate to the cam so I could fit the new white plastic plate thing so I might try taking it off and reseating it tomorrow.

sounds like a distributor problem, arent there two type on an mi16 though??

theres only one type, and both cap and arm are brand new and work on another engine absolutely fine.

Problem with your king lead??? It may not be making a nice connection onto the top of the cap but when a plug is used and rammed in there its fine..... Just a suggestion.

Maxi: I will test it with another king lead, although I think I already did tbh.

 

d-9: I will check with the cap off, its definitely very tightly attached to the cam and the engine turns over fine and the cam must be turning as the valves open and close and a puff of fuel charge comes out of the spark plug holes if they are removed.

 

At the moment my car is the other side of town and I dont have another car on the road these days so have no way of getting there other than a bus which clearly isn't going to happen. However I've come up with the cunning plan of buying my mates CTI 16v as a runabout, I'm just waiting for him to bring it round :)

When You tested with the main wire from the coil, where did You ground the sparkplug then? Can it not be so that You have a faulty ground connection to the block????????

I had a spark plug clamped to the strut brace with mole grips for testing both with the main lead and the secondary lead. I repeated this test more times than I care to remember and it was definitely grounded.

this was due to a faulty main power cable (the one that runs between the alternator, starter motor and battery).

 

I have no idea how it caused this fault :D;)
